    Here’s how to match your prerecorded video performances to event and animation timings within your virtual worlds using Timeline within a Virtual Production pipeline.

    PRODUCTION PHASE

    We cannot build that which we cannot see. Let’s enable frame accurate video performance previews in Unity using Timeline so we can visualize our work with precision!

    1. Browser > Unity Asset Store > Free Default Playables Asset > Add To Assets
    2. Unity > Package Manager > Search ‘Default Playables’ > Install
    3. Timeline > Add Track > Video Script Playable Track
    4. Video Script Playable Track > Add Video Script Playable Asset
    5. Inspector > Assign Video Player
    6. Inspector > Assign Video Clip

    You now have frame accurate video performance previews from Timeline.

    Scrub slowly. Fast scrubbing won’t work and isn’t available.

    Animate your game objects and VFX to desired effect.

    EXPORT PHASE

    • Timeline > Video Script Playable Track > Video Script Playable Asset > Inspector > Unassign Video Clip
    • Recorder > Export

    Notes:

    Assigning both a Video Player and a Video Clip to your Video Script Playable Asset is required for frame accurate working previews (if you’re missing one of the two – no previews for you).

    And at the same time…

    Failure to clear the assigned Video Clip from the Video Script Playable Asset will prevent reliable video playback during export (your video clip will invariably freeze at some inopportune moment during playback whether you are exporting or merely entering Play Mode)…

    These are the things I wish anyone had cared to document publicly or cared to teach me personally.

    Oh, the hours I’ve lost to the churn of fumbling around In the dark while attempting to unearth a tenable workflow such as I’ve outlined here today, for myself and for you.

    Many “gotcha-gremlins” lie in wait to steal our time and sanity when it comes to integrating live action performance with virtual environments believably – together I believe we can clear the path for future storytellers who have yet to arrive and who will have meaningful stories to tell.

    Currently at a stage where everything is still a ‘work-in-progress’. Expecting much improvement over the next few days.

    Finally returning focus to virtual production, now that the WordPress component of my ‘ambition infrastructure’ is complete.

    I’ve just posted the latest of my virtual production composites (it’s rough at the moment. The final goal being to achieve a much more robust key from within Unity)

    Nonetheless, excited to be keying video using methods enabling video subjects to recieve light and cast shadows within virtual environments.

    After reviewing the most recent releases of Unreal Engine, I have once again returned to Unity 2021.3.35f1 .

    Unreal Engine (Native Apple Silicon versions of 5.2 and 5.3 tested) proving far too unreliable.

    Today, I’m breaking new ground in my creative journey.

    I’m dynamically re-lighting and seemlessly integrating pre-lit green screen video into wildly varied scenarios using the Unity Game Engine.

    We’re all familiar with green screen. No need to explain the concept here.

    Historically, green screen video has always fallen into the category of ‘What You Film Is What You Get‘. Failure to light your green screen video correctly for its intended final composite yields a final product that looks like… bad green screen.

    Virtual production eliminates this limitation.

    Flipping The Script With Virtual Production

    Virtual Production flips this script, entirely. If I wish to composite myself into a forest environment – I am no longer required to film myself as if I were in a forest environment at the time of recording. Same is true for any scenario my imagination dreams up.

    Virtual production introduces new flexibility throughout my creative production pipeline. I am beyond excited to push through past barriers and imposed limitations.

    Fewer Resources. Greater Possibilities.

    No large crews. No large lighting setups. No large expense.

    Today, All I need Are:
    The Right Tools (Virtual Production & My Mac).
    My Ambition & Imagination.
    My Fervent Passion For Creative On-The-Fly Problem Solving.

    In The Past, My Options Were Limited:
    “Go-broke-attempting-to-go-big”.
    Scale down my imagination.
    Give up & move on.
    (Not an acceptable solution among the options.)

    Today, my world gets a lot bigger.

    I can film or live-stream in front of a green screen – compositing the resulting video in a manner which is reactive and interactive with the virtual world in which I choose to tell my tale.

    This just might be worth dancing over 🎉.

    Background:

    Virtual Production within Unity Editor requires the Live Capture Editor Package along with the Virtual Camera Companion App for iOS (these two apps link an iOS device with a virtual camera inside of Unity Editor).

    The simplicity of this setup is beautiful – it allows a Camera Operator to use an iPhone as a combined ‘Camera, Field Monitor, & Take Recorder‘ while remaining untethered to the host machine.

    It’s amazing!

    Video Streaming Supported

    The Issue:

    In 2020, Apple switched from Intel chips to their own Apple Silicon. Performance gains for Unity Editor on ‘base hardware’ like the MacBook Air M1 8g became an absolute possibility – it’s a dream team (between Unity & Apple) in so many ways…

    But we lost ‘Video Streaming’ for Apple Silicon.

    Non-Working experience on iOS – Unity 2022.3.19F1 (Apple Silicon)
    Video Streaming Not Supported‘.

    The ‘video streaming’ link between Unity Editor and an iOS device is an absolute requirement for virtual productions using Unity Game Engine. Without ‘video streaming’, Camera Operators cannot see what they are doing (they can still operate and record – but they’re flying blind with no view into the virtual world.)

    State of The Editor:

    Unity Editor 2021.3.24F1 (Intel) supports ‘video streaming’👍.Unity Editor 2022.3.19F1 (Apple Silicon) does not support ‘video streaming’ 👎.

    Do you know of a solution for getting Live Capture to properly communicate live-video previews from Unity Editor 2022+ to Virtual Camera app on an iOS device?
