  1. Gotta love the little personal touches, really makes me feel valued as a customer ❤️

(I've just noticed that How is capitalised, after the comma on the previous line, and now I'm more triggered by that.)

  2. Oh dear. As a #Brsk customer I've been migrated to #YouFibre, but now I'm getting marketing emails for the latter saying they'll buy me out of my current contract (with them) if I switch to them.

Nice to know that they offer 200Mbit for the same price I'm currently paying for 150 though, that's probably worth looking into. Only a 12 month contract so I should be able to escape before #VirginMedia, the new owners of YouFibre, screw everything up.

  7. I'm slowly weaning myself off #VirginMedia. Phone lines have gone digital via another service. (@aaisp)

E-mail will go (through relays) to my own server, once I get that tied down. Progress is being made in that direction.

And then it will be down to the connection, and byebye #Virgin, and their inflation +3.5% scam for good.

  8. Looking at possibly leaving Virgin Media for Toob as VM won't give me a good deal, and Toob is one of the only other companies I can go for due to cables in the UK often being dial up speeds my location.

  10. Virgin's left hand doesn't know what Virgin's right hand is doing... and what it is doing is sticking sharp objects up Virgin's own bum.

They had a rep at our door every other week to sell us their FTTP.

We did decide it looked like it made sense for us in the end, and in our last place we were trouble free Virgin customers for over 6 years.

Yesterday I got a call to tell me they would be at our place to do the install 13:00-18:00 this Saturday.

Then today I got this text.

I put the order in on December 17th... install now rescheduled to 17th of fucking March.

(This is must be about the 4th, maybe 5th, reschedule.)

  15. RE: mastodon.social/@ispreview/116

As somebody who escaped #VirginMedia for #Brsk, I'm deeply unhappy about this news. Probably won't jump ship immediately but I anticipate rising prices, worse customer support, and more web filtering over the next few years.

I'm just hoping they don't go the whole hog and remove #IPv6 support which Virgin still doesn't have.

  20. Virgin Media fined £23.8m for leaving vulnerable customers at risk during digital switchover

The regulator said the telecoms giant disconnected users of telecare devices — typically elderly or disabled people who depend on emergency alarms linked to monitoring centres — between August 2022 and December 2023.

Virgin Media reported a series of serious incidents to Ofcom in late 2023, prompting an investigation into whether the company had complied with consumer protection rules.

    What is telecare?

    Telecare systems
Devices that connect vulnerable people — often elderly or disabled — to emergency support services via their landline.

    How it works
A user presses a button on a pendant or base unit, which automatically calls carers or monitoring centres.

    Why it matters
Telecare provides immediate access to help in emergencies such as falls, illness or accidents, often saving lives.

    Risks during switchover
If telecare devices are disconnected or not properly supported during the move from analogue to digital landlines, users may lose their lifeline to emergency services.

    Who relies on it
Hundreds of thousands of households across the UK, particularly those with vulnerable residents, depend on telecare for daily safety and reassurance.

    Failures uncovered in migration process

Ofcom’s investigation found Virgin Media failed to properly identify and record telecare customers, leaving significant gaps in its screening process.

This meant thousands of vulnerable users did not receive tailored support during the migration, and in some cases were disconnected entirely, preventing their devices from contacting alarm monitoring centres.

Ian Strawhorne, Ofcom’s Director of Enforcement, said:

“It’s unacceptable that vulnerable customers were put at direct risk of harm and left without appropriate support by Virgin Media, during what should have been a safe and straightforward upgrade to their landline services. Today’s fine makes clear to companies that, if they fail to protect their vulnerable customers, they can expect to face similar enforcement action.”

    Financial penalty and remedial steps

The £23.8 million fine reflects the vulnerability of those affected, the duration of the breaches, and the seriousness of the potential harm. Virgin Media has four weeks to pay the penalty, which will be passed to HM Treasury.

The company admitted its failings and cooperated with Ofcom’s investigation, securing a 30% discount on the fine. Virgin Media has since paused migrations, updated its policies, and introduced new safeguards, including:

    • Manual reviews of customer records to identify telecare users
    • A campaign contacting more than 42,000 telecare customers to support migration
    • A new engagement plan to avoid disconnections for non-engaging telecare users
    • Work with local authorities to establish an “end of process” for vulnerable customers

    Understanding the digital landline switchover

    What’s changing
Telecoms providers across the UK are replacing the traditional copper-based phone network (PSTN) with digital landlines that operate over broadband. The PSTN is considered outdated and increasingly unreliable.

    Why it matters
According to Ofcom, the switchover is necessary to ensure “modern, reliable and resilient home phone services” — but the regulator has warned that vulnerable customers must be protected throughout the process.

    How it works
Customers are being migrated to Voice over IP (VoIP) services, which route calls through internet connections rather than physical phone lines. Providers are responsible for ensuring continuity of service.

    Timeline
The transition is industry-led and expected to complete by January 2027. Ofcom says it is monitoring compliance and investigating cases where emergency access may have been disrupted.

    Public concerns
Advocacy groups and local authorities have raised concerns about telecare users, households without broadband, and those at risk during power cuts. Ofcom has stated that “any disruption to their device’s connection could have material impacts on their safety.”

    What to check
Ofcom advises customers to contact their provider to confirm whether their devices — especially care alarms — are compatible with digital lines, and to ask about backup options during outages.

    Virgin Media response

A spokesperson for Virgin Media said:

“We recognise that we didn’t get everything right and have since addressed the migration issues identified by Ofcom. Our customers’ safety is always our top priority and, following an end-to-end review, we have already introduced a comprehensive package of improvements and enhanced support for vulnerable customers.”

The company added that the majority of migrations had been completed “without issue” and it is now working with government and industry partners on a national awareness campaign.

  24. Anyone know what the heck is up with Virgin Media’s Dublin Aorta network?

Seeing intermittent 100% packet loss which is pissing me right off while trying to get work done.

Update: reported the issue and asked them to escalate.

  25. This is, of course, the same VirginMedia and UPP who, after the enforced acquisition, stated that “nothing will change”. Good to see that didn't last.

I'm also annoyed because another FTTP provider covers my village. Every street but mine. I'm looking at the telegraph pole outside my house, and it has their equipment on it. But they can't provide me service. They also ignored my email to customer services asking “why you no take my money, save me from Vermin”

    #VirginMedia #UPP

  26. Oh wow. Just had the email from Virgin Media describing the switchover from my current provider (UPP) to them.

At some point early in the morning, all UPP customers in the area get cut off. We're then offline until the VirginMedia blokey comes and installs their shitty "superhub” (it's not super if I can't run it in modem/bridge mode, is it?).

And then I'll be stuck with shitty virgin, their shitty hub, and their shitty “3.9% + inflation” price rise every year. Greedy fucks.

  27. Not only is the #PremierInn hotel chain free wifi near-unusably slow in an attempt to upsell their £5/day "Premium Wifi", it's provided by #VirginMedia so it doesn't even use #IPv6!

1Mbit/sec down, 500kbit/sec up, and legacy IP :/

  28. Confusing - VMO2's parent companies already have a joint venture to create a fibre network with VMO2 as the anchor tenant, now VMO2 have spun off their fibre network.

  29. Have you tried taking it off the wall and turning it upside down?

(Whoever designed the Virgin Media access point clearly lived on a planet without gravity. It’s left an unsightly bit of unpainted wall showing for the moment but otherwise should be far more robust now.)

  30. I continue to waste time browsing through #VirginMedia's forums for #VirginMobile and I find it absolutely horrifying that they've been cutting off people and they haven't even been providing PAC codes.

    Like what the heck?

People shouldn't be unfairly punished just because of Virgin Media's botched systems and their botched way of migration. When manually searching for networks, EE on my phone still displays as Virgin. And, I still have a Virgin Mobile entry when manually searching for networks.

How hard is it just to send a new SIM card to anyone who's struggling with the migration?

    ---

Can't wait to see the chaos when they start migrating Virgin Mobile customers on
#O2's 360 system as well, since they migrated all of us onto their legacy system.

Oh, and potentially bills being higher than they should be in April due to O2's tariff system (my tariff shows up as £13.29 unlimited 30D as an example, when I am paying £6.79 thanks to a discount bolt-on they put on). That's gonna be pure chaos.

I'm thankful that I do have all these benefits on O2 now, but I still feel sorry for people who were screwed over by this. I enjoy having access to unlimited data, unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, free roaming in 72 countries (25GB limit in standard EU 48 countries with 63 day FUP and unlimited usage in Travel Inclusive 24 countries with 2mbps speed cap) and O2 Priority for £6.79/mo, don't get me wrong. That's a stark contrast from 2GB, 1500 minutes, unlimited texts, one month rolling, unlimited WA+FB+Twitter, free roaming in 47 countries (no limit, 60 day FUP).

  31. So, last Wednesday from 18:00 through to early Saturday morning our #virginMedia #cableModem #broadband was pretty much unusable. 400ms ping times and 80-100% packetloss. All day Saturday it was fine, then crapped out again Sunday morning, at which point I booked an engineer visit for today.

As soon as that was booked the connection went back to normal and stayed that way 🙄

  36. #VirginMedia / #VMO2 emailed me to offer me an exclusive chance to pay £6 more per month for cable broadband. Given how much they involuntarily raised my bills by earlier in the year, no way, especially as it doesn't protect you from next year's rate rise.
In return, they would increase my broadband speed.
I am waiting until I have a 5G phone and a 5G router, then I will cut the cord.
