I made some cyanotypes with my son this week. We went for a walk to gather some botanical materials. I wanted to show him how you can paint the photo emulsion on paper in any shape so I made a little cat silhouette and then set it in the sun with some Virginia creeper leaves for a sweet little print.

Even the horrible Virginia creeper has its uses. It's strong and ropey and bends easily, so can be used as biodegradable plant ties.

I know this is Virginia Creeper but it still gives me the creeps for the poison ivy vibe given off😬 Note the nifty little "pads" on the tendril ends in the second image. Also in the first image there are some little white dots in the lower right corner. Leftover tendril pads from a previous years vine.

I stand corrected, @mu . #VirginiaCreeper is native to #Maine, but it can get out of control and potentially strangle maple trees and lilacs (which we have a lot of). I'll focus on keeping it away from the trees.

"Q - I find the Virginia Creeper to be a very invasive plant. It climbs up my lilacs 20 ft high, basically anything that isn’t evergreen. I went to trim my forsythia and half of what I cut off were Creeper vines. I also battled Norway Maples and the small leafed rose that are defined as invasive but what’s up with this vine?"

"A - Virginia creeper/woodbine (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) is a highly adaptable, native Maine plant that thrives in a number of environments, and provides multiple animal species with food in the wild. Because of this, it’s often used to reclaim ground to fill in holes in the landscape or to effect an erosion control strategy. So, I took a jaunt around the yard in between rain showers, and used #FloraIncognita to identify 30 plants (it was wrong about one of them, but the accuracy of the reading was at 29%). It identified two species -- one that could potentially strangle living trees (#VirginiaCreeper), and the other one is invasive but provides food for pollinators (Autumn Olive). I think we'll focus on gathering the Autumn Olive berries until we figure out how to deal with it without herbicides (apparently cutting it back, makes it grow even more). Hmmmm... Has anyone else out there dealt with #AutumnOlive (Elaeagnus umbellata)?

There’s a tradition in my family that your grandmother makes you a quilt when you turn 13; my great aunt stepped in and made me one after my grandmother died.
