🇮🇹 Air-launched systems have had a complicated history. #Pegasus and #VirginOrbit’s #LauncherOne neither achieved commercial sustainability. Pegasus suffered a sharp decline in its launch cadence as customers migrated to lower-cost rideshare alternatives, and Virgin Orbit entered bankruptcy in 2023 after only six flights.

"Virgin Orbit IP for sale on LinkedIn. In a post this week on the social networking site LinkedIn, former Virgin Orbit chief executive Dan Hart said that the Virgin Orbit IP library is being made available for licensing."

  4. The whole story of #VirginOrbit is such a massive shame. Look how hopeful this video was, the possibilities were endless. New jobs were to be created, new science and technology careers for young people would come to #Cornwall. For generations anyone wanting to follow a technical career had to leave. Maybe now things would start to change? Then on 9 January 2023 the first launch from Newquay failed to reach orbit. Game over. They later declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 4 April 2023. Sad times 😔

  6. Once again, #rocketlab is capturing customers from other small launchers.

Today Rocket Lab announced they inked a deal with Japanese Earth Imaging company iQPS to launch their satellite into orbit!

Originally, the satellite was supposed to launch on Virgin Orbit's LauncherOne.

  10. Bankrupt company Virgin Orbit has auctioned off its assets and equipment to aerospace firms Rocket Lab, Stratolaunch, and Vast's Launcher. This follows Virgin Orbit's inability to financially recover, resulting in the sale of its valuable resources to industry counterparts.

  11. In the purely small-launch arena, #Vector and #VirginOrbit have both entered bankruptcy 📉, and #Astra has abandoned its first attempt to build a small #rocket 🚀 due to more failed launches than successful ones.

  12. #Reuters 📆 April 18, 2023 The #rocket industry faces an interesting #dichotomy. Demand has surged from launching a few satellites 🛰️ on small rockets to launching swarms of #satellites at once using bigger #rockets, but U.S. #RocketStartups are taking drastic measures to survive a tight funding environment where fears have been exacerbated by the bankruptcy of #VirginOrbit. reuters.com/technology/rocket-

  13. 🚀 Virgin Orbit, owned by Richard Branson and specializing in satellite launches, has filed for bankruptcy after failing to find new investors following a failed rocket launch from Western Europe 🛰️. #VirginOrbit #bankruptcy

  14. #VirginOrbit is putting their best face on hoping for a buyout. They really have accomplished a lot, but it remains to be seen if their tech can complete with #SpaceX rideshare launches and the crowded small-launcher market (many with great new tech of their own). I've seen Cosmic Girl (their 747) several times, and I'll be sad to see it grounded.

  15. It's still possible Virgin Orbit will find a buyer willing to continue its launch business, though the more likely path is probably the wholesale selling off of the company's business and assets.

Branson further cements his position as a "senior" creditor.

  17. Virgin Orbit filing for bankruptcy isn't great for the people involved, and of the two space-based projects I'd much rather have seen Virgin Galactic go bust as this business at least has a practical use. That said, given how much the UK government were trying to claim the (ultimately failed) launch of the rocket from the UK (sort of, if you squint a bit) earlier this year was great for Britain, the #schadenfreude is quite tasty this morning.
