Waaaaaay back in the mists of @rpimag history ... in Hackspace Magazine issue 66 no less.. I wrote an article I enjoyed researching on advanced paper aeroplanes. I found out about and older style of laminated paper planes and, of course, whipped up my own design in @inkscape for the #vinylcutter. I've just dug out the files today as I thought they might make a cheap fun thing for the #emfcamp night market or for trades!

The name plate was designed in #FreeCAD¹, sliced in #PrusaSlicer¹, and printed on my custom-built 3D printer. Its parts were designed and shared by @bear_lab and runs on #MarlinFW.
The leatherette was designed in #Inkscape, the G-code generated with #KiriMoto, and cut with a custom little #vinylCutter attachment for the 3D printer².

Had fun last night running a show and tell session about heat transfer vinyl. It's fun to multilayer and also great fun to use the laser to cut fabric and then sort of seal the edges with HTV to make patches! #making #fabric #lasercutter #vinylcutter

First #FreeCADing of the year: I've bought a second MGN9 mini rail and modified my #vinylCutter mount for pens, brushes, and whatnot.
-
Enough #FreeCAD shenanigans for the weekend! I've designed and printed two trays that bolt to the printer and hold tools and parts (the #vinylCutter add-on, some spare Revo Six nozzles, a flush cutter, and a small wire brush) to tidy it up a bit. 🙂
-
It also does vinyl stickers! 🙂
(And I'm more than happy with the results!)
Edit: The stickers are 31mm on the long side.
-
The replacement for my vinyl cutter, which was lost in the mail, arrived, along with the tiniest linear rail I've ever seen (MGN9, 55mm)! 😄
So I fired up #FreeCAD and designed the actual mount as I had it in mind.
Here's also a comparison of my #DIY test cutter (the big grey one) and the "production" part. 🙃
-
I gave the #DIY drag knife another try. 🙃
This time, I designed it with a 45° cutting angle and a 2mm tip offset. It took four passes (the spring seems to be a bit too weak), and while the cut isn't the cleanest, at least no blades snapped this time. 😄
I think I've got the process figured out so far. A ready-made drag knife should work a bit better, I think. My DIY version provides quite a substantial amount of leverage, which certainly isn't ideal.
-
So, I ordered one of these little drag knives for vinyl cutters (along with some blades), but it apparently got lost in the mail …
I decided to use the time, until I receive a replacement for my lost order, to improvise a drag knife and get accustomed to the process, which was not without its challenges … 😂 2/2

Aftermath of my late night #vinylcutter weeding. Not in picture: large amounts of consumed Christmas leftover chocolate balls.

@leigh_hackspace has made this fundraising piece for Leigh Spinner's Mill (https://www.spinnersmill.co.uk/). A central acrylic elevator raises up a shaft behind perspex on a continuous nylon belt, stopping at fundraising goals on the way.
The windows to the left and right will be used for high value donor plaques.
Cut from 18mm MDF and acrylic on our Shapeoko XXL CNC, painted, with some vinyl detail.

Bought some reflective tape from a hardware shop, managed to dial in some settings for it on the #VinylCutter

Should I buy a #vinylcutter ?

Ahahahahaha...
Used item #fail #theft #maker #DIY #electronics #vinylcutter
So, I saw this for a reasonable price on a certain 'marketplace' site. The seller told me his wife couldn't find the power cable and dropped the price, saying he had checked and I could buy my own compatible cable.
Due to various other projects, I haven't been able to get to this for about a month. I sourced a power adapter, but... the barrel plug wasn't the right size and wiggled far too much. Next, I sourced a larger barrel plug pigtail to use with my benchtop power supply.
Nope... too large...
"I know!" - I will take it apart to power the control board directly.
Hmmm - that's weird, there is no cable to the button panel...
Oh... wait... there are no electronics, motors or anything... This is a "display unit", likely stolen from a store... #lessonlearned

Posted the parametric feathers here: https://www.printables.com/model/519190-parametric-feathers-3d-2d-versions
The code allows for 3D and 2D versions, so you can either print or cut feathers ( #lasercutter #vinylcutter #cricut) and will generate an array of feathers based on how many you specify.
In addition to the #OpenSCAD code, there are example files for 3 different types of feather in #stl, #svg and #dxf format.

Running some jobs on the tiny graphtec vinyl cutter. Such a cute yet useful A4 machine! #CNC #vinylcutter
