  1. Joni Mitchell, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, 1975 on Asylum

Mitchell’s seventh studio LP and third on Asylum – continuing to draw on more jazz-rock influences and more synthesizers (Moog, ARP).

Some find it a step down from 1974’s Court and Spark but I really love this record and this presing.

My copy is the 2024 Vinyl Me, Please reissue by Rhino in the Vinyl Me, Please Essentials series (E-139), on green vinyl as a 2xLP at 45 RPM, lacquer cut by Ryan Smith. I know audiophiles tend to like these 2x45rpm releases but I’d actually prefer a single LP cut well.

  2. T. Rex, T. Rex, 1970 on Reprise

Debut album as “T. Rex” for Marc Bolan and Mickey Finn, having previously released as Tyrannosaurus Rex, out on Reprise in 1970. Tony Visconti produced and reportedly added bass and recorder to some tracks.

The electric guitar Bolan holds on the gatefold cover signals the shift into a more rock sound from the folkier early records but also still a fair amount of strings and acoustic stuff here.

My copy is the 2024 VMP Reissue on green (“Jewel of Frost”) 180g vinyl.

  3. Boogie Down Productions, By All Means Necessary, 1988 on Jive

Second album from KRS-One under the Boogie Down Productions moniker, after the 1987 killing of Scott La Rock. Arguably the birth of socially conscious hip-hop, undeniably a key album in it.

    So, you’re a philosopher?

    Yes, I think very deeply

In about four seconds, a teacher will begin to speak

Let us begin, what, where, why or when

Will all be explained like instructions to a game

Did not know in listening to this back in ’88 that all these years later I’d be vegan and KRS-One would be 60 years old.

My copy is the 2024 Vinyl Me, Please reissue on 180g orange vinyl, with listening notes by Elijah Watson. Sounds great and has solid packaging – I hope VMP’s return under new ownership can keep the quality high.

  4. Broadcast, Tender Buttons, 2005 on Warp Records

This was the third studio album from Broadcast, at this point largely a proect of Trish Keenan and James Cargill as a duo, credited on the album as James & Trish. Tender Buttons was also a book of poetry by Gertrude Stein that came out in 1914 – I took a flyer on the album just based on that (and did not know Broadcast before) but it is really wonderful.

The vinyl releases have a slightly different track order than the CDs or streaming.

My copy is the 2025 Vinyl Me Please “20th Anniversary” edition on magenta & cyan vinyl, in the Essentials Track. It’s a great package and sounds wonderful.

  5. David Porter, Chapter 1: Back in the Day, 2022 on MIME Records

David Porter is maybe best well-known as a songwriter and producer – the staff writer at Stax records who penned “Hold On, I’m Coming” and “Soul Man” among so many others, and who worked extensively with Isaac Hayes in the late sixties and early seventies. He’s also the found of The Consortium MMT in Memphis, a non-profit that supports and mentors musicians.

  6. A day of #writing & so I’m kicking off the #listening with this, #JackJohnson, one of my favourite #MilesDavis albums from this period.

This is the #VinylMePlease pressing from the Electric Miles set - it sounds great, even better than the #MoFi imo.

  9. Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights

A perfect debut album, with nary a misstep.

VMP pressing mastered by Barry Grint, spread over 2LPs, gives everything space to breathe.

  10. #NowSpinning #RoomOnFire by #TheStrokes.

I’m a huge fan & while this didn’t have the impact of Is This It, it’s packed with infectious hooks, irresistible riffs, a clever turns of phrase. Side A, with Reptilia, Automatic Stop, & Between Love & Hate takes some beating. & Meet Me In the Bathroom oozes cool.

This is a #RyanKSmith cut on behalf of #VinylMePlease & it has punch, swagger & dynamics to burn.

  11. #NowSpinning #BitchesBrew by #MilesDavis courtesy of the #VinylMePlease #ElectricMiles boxset.

This is such a great set, impeccably done. I’ve got the #MoFi versions of about half of these, & the #VMP is better. That is particularly the case with BB - the VMP sounds edgier, more dynamic, as it should.

I’m still new to this period of Miles - but BB is monumental: unique, challenging, haunting, & lyrical.

  12. Miles Davis - In a Silent Way

This is a real favorite of the "electric Miles" period. It's such an interesting use of the *studio* as a tool for giving structure to improvisation, selecting out the bits and pieces that work and then editing them together.

Despite the 'electric' tag, this is a really "open", meditative record, given a lovely remastering and pressing by VMP as part of the Electric Miles box set.

  13. Lunchtime tunes: Aretha Now

This album is the most recent (and likely final) selection from my #VinylMePlease subscription.

It's so cool to get a #vinyl #record every month, but their selections aren't really in my interest areas.

Though I do really love the premium detail -- especially that little booklet in the Classics line. Classy and informative. A nice touch.

This is a mono repress of a classic, and my first opportunity to use the cart that I'd modified to mono.

And it sounds great! So happy with the quality of the album and the playback.

I've been protecting my older records with sleeves and inners from Vinyl Storage Solutions. This VMP edition of Aretha Now just barely fit in the 12" sleeve. It looks great!

They're a Canadian company so that saved me on shipping, and they're have occasional sales :)

Tricky bit was moving the hype sticker from the VMP wrapper to the external sleeve. Careful peeling did the trick.

  14. I’m #NowSpinning the first of this month’s #VinylMePlease haul, #IsThisIt by #TheStrokes.

I truly love this album, &, again, #VMP delivers: flat, centred, detail, but not at the expense of punch.

The album itself is a true modern classic: great song after great song, hooks, melodies, & plenty of swagger. & #BarelyLegal is immense.

My one complaint: I wished they’d gone with the EU ass & glove cover. But you can’t have everything I suppose.

  15. I’m #NowSpinning one new record while I wait for the delivery of another haul.

This is the #VinylMePlease issue of #Weathervanes, the latest by #JasonIsbell and the 400 Unit.

After getting into Isbell & the 400 via S/T (If We Were Vampires is just outstanding), I found Reunions to be a touch underwhelming & a little dad-rock-lite, truth be told. On a first listen, this is a lot more to my taste. #StrawberryWoman & #WhiteBeretta are standout.

  16. I’m returning to this June’s #VinylMePlease drop & I’m #NowSpinning #Transatlanticism by #DeathCabForCutie.

This is an album I really wasn’t that familiar with, but it’s hugely grown on me. Which is a strength of these subscription services. They encourage you to seek out the less familiar.

And the title song is so, so good.

More generally, #VMP do a great job - bob on mastering, plush packaging, great customer service. What’s not to love?

    #NowListening #NowPlaying #Vinyl #VinylRecords

  17. Still making my way through June’s #VMP drop & so I’m #NowSpinning #HighTopMountain by #SturgillSimpson.

I’m generally so-so with country, but Simpson is an exception. Just love the bluegrass inflected vibes throughout this: just great melodies & razor sharp lyricism.

This is a #RyanKSmith cut &, once again, #VinylMePlease has done a great job. I’m normally indifferent when it comes to vinyl variations - but this really looks the part.

  18. Heatwave back with a vengeance & I’m spinning #InHotHouse by #BenWebster.

While not hugely familiar with Webster, this live set is a total riot. It’s not quite a sonic marvel, but the thing is alive with the chink of drinks glasses, the mumble of the audience, & the stomp of the musicians as they kick into gear.

& the musicianship is really top notch: it swings, it rocks, it snarls.

This #VinylMePlease pressing is limited to 200.

  19. Second #VinylMePlease record of the month, & I’m #NowSpinning #MonksMusic by the #TheloniusMonk Septet.

Now this is really exceptional stuff from an incredible line up: #ArtBlakey, #ColemanHawkins & #JohnColtrane.

& the music is white hot: Well, You Needn’t, & Off Minor being favourites. Whilst I love Monk It’s Monk’s Time - this is probably my favourite of his albums.

& #RyanKSmith has done a bang on job with this cut - rich & dynamic.

  20. Just got a new bundle courtesy of #VinylMePlease!

First up, #Transatlanticism by #DeathCabForCutie. I’m a fan of #BenGibbard’s work with #ThePostalService, I was never as deep into Death Cab. However, listening to this a couple times, it does really resonate. The title track, The New Year, & Tiny Vessels are early stand outs.

In terms of the #vinyl itself, #VMP have done another great job. Detailed, dynamic with near silent blacks.

  21. Coffee, nowhere to be, little else to do, & so I’m #NowSpinning #FathersAndSons by #MuddyWaters.

This is the latest dispatch from #VinylMePlease &, as per their other offerings, the presentation is super high quality. I’m not super-familiar with this album, but the pressing is clean, flat, & centred. This is a #KevinGray cut & the SQ is warm, smooth & reminds me a little of the feel of Howlin’ Wolf’s London Sessions.

    #NowListening #NowPlaying #VinylRecords #Vinyl #Music #Blues #VMP

  22. Change in mood & I’m #NowListening to #TheShapeOfJazzToCome by #OrnetteColeman.

I’m not particularly into free #jazz, & so Coleman loses me with his later stuff. But this is pitch perfect, original, incredible musicianship, but with more than enough hooks.

This #VinylMePlease reissue is mastered by #RyanKSmith & sounds incredible. I’ve been impressed with #VMP. Being based in the UK, I am paying a premium, but they do offer a premium product.

  23. Hippo Campus - LP3

Here's a band that I wouldn't have found were it not for VMP. Sophisticated, melodic, pop - relatively synth-heavy but also kind of stripped back - they've been compared to Vampire Weekend, which doesn't really give the flavor of this LP, at least...but hints at the sound.

    #nowPlaying #vinyl #pop #vinylMePlease

  24. Sun is now shining & I’m #NowPlaying #TheThreeFacesOfYusefLateef by #YusefLateef. This is the 5th offering from this month’s #VinylMePlease bundle.

This album is new to me & on the third listen, there is plenty to enjoy. For me, the tracks with tenor sax are closer to being my jam, but there is also some decent #jazz flute here. The oboe is less my thing & will need further listens.

This is AAA cut by #RyanKSmith & sound as good as you might expect.

    #NowListening #Vinyl #VinylRecords #Music

  25. #NowListening to #ImWideAwakeItsMorning by #BrightEyes, the fourth offering included in this week’s #VinylMePlease bundle.

This is an album that I know well & love. I’ve other pressings with which to compare (incl. the 2005 #BernieGrundman cut). To my ears, the #VMP wins out: more dynamic with greater depth. The 2005 cut always struck me as a little flat.

The album itself is a modern classic imo - #FirstDayOfMyLife & #Lua are both stunningly good.

    #Vinyl #VinylRecords #NowPlaying #Music

  26. #NowPlaying #StarPeople by #MilesDavis, cut by #RyanKSmith, again, courtesy of #VinylMePlease (this being the third from this month’s bundle).

I’m very new to Miles’ electric period - it took quite a while for me to begin to get #BitchesBrew. This, from 1983, is a very similar vibe, but perhaps a little more accessible. The title track, for example, is recognisably blues scales & riffs.

Again, this is impeccably mastered, pressed, & presented.

    #NowListening #Vinyl #VinylRecords #Jazz #Music

  27. This morning I’m #NowListening to the second of yesterday’s #VinylMePlease haul: #Nebraska by #BruceSpringsteen.

Not listened to Springsteen in a while, but this chimes most deeply with me. I have a thing for noir (Cain, Thompson, etc.) & this album just drips with it. IMO, his songwriting has never been better.

The #vinyl is, once again, impeccably pressed. High quality jacket, nice colour print included, booklet & sounds as good as this album can. Top draw.
