Then finally over to Manhattan for Mark Guiliana at the Vanguard. The dude is just an inhuman drummer. Nothing more to be said. Played all new (unnamed) material with his stellar band, but really just comes down to trying to piece together what MG is doing on drums. I had to give up because it was breaking my brain. Thankfully he also writes a great song. Amazing stuff at the VV.

Tonight: a special night when you get to go Medeski > Mehldau, two of the greatest keys-men of the common era. But that's what I did tonight.
First, a stellar set of straight improv from Billy Martin and John Medeski. Absolute mastery and superlative chemistry on display.
Then, a couple blocks away to the Vanguard for Gilad Hekselman who was great, but his band... Even better. Mehldau + Morgan + Gilmore = sickest backing band in jazz. Brad was sublime in everything he did. A great night in Manhattan.

Tonight: August is Frisell month at the Vanguard, or at least has been the last few years. First week is Andrew Cyrille with BF, David Virelles and Ben Street. As straight-up "jazz guitar" as you'll get from Frisell, he still managed to conure some serious magic, especially on the two tunes of his they played. Maybe one drum solo too many. Or two too many? Joey Baron was something else. Often we think of a drummer "pushing" a guitarist to mean pushing tempo. But Baron "pushed" Julian into a set full of incredible quiet & contemplation. The playing was still something to marvel at, religious even, multiple "Holy shit!" moments, but it was so gorgeous/peaceful. Seen Julian literally dozens of times, this felt very new. I think some were looking for more shredding this week, but I fucking loved it.
Second stop: a ridiculous band at the Vanguard this week and it totally exceeded my expectations. Drummer Johnathan Blake backed by two best-in-class tenor players in Chris Potter and Mark Turner, plus bassist Ben Street. Possibly the best playing I've seen from all four of them and the double sax was quite inventive. Killer all around.
