Then finally over to Manhattan for Mark Guiliana at the Vanguard. The dude is just an inhuman drummer. Nothing more to be said. Played all new (unnamed) material with his stellar band, but really just comes down to trying to piece together what MG is doing on drums. I had to give up because it was breaking my brain. Thankfully he also writes a great song. Amazing stuff at the VV.

Tonight: a special night when you get to go Medeski > Mehldau, two of the greatest keys-men of the common era. But that's what I did tonight.
First, a stellar set of straight improv from Billy Martin and John Medeski. Absolute mastery and superlative chemistry on display.
Then, a couple blocks away to the Vanguard for Gilad Hekselman who was great, but his band... Even better. Mehldau + Morgan + Gilmore = sickest backing band in jazz. Brad was sublime in everything he did. A great night in Manhattan.

Second stop: a ridiculous band at the Vanguard this week and it totally exceeded my expectations. Drummer Johnathan Blake backed by two best-in-class tenor players in Chris Potter and Mark Turner, plus bassist Ben Street. Possibly the best playing I've seen from all four of them and the double sax was quite inventive. Killer all around.

This is the sound source I got on BC when we couldn't go out anywhere in 2020.
It was EP in which the proceeds would be supported to jazz players because it was a live sound source at Village Vanguard. 3years later, it has became the album and I'm glad to be nominated for a Grammy.
