First study of its kind sheds light on pregnancy in the Viking Age

    Tuesday, 13 May 2025

“Freydís’s behaviour is surprising but may find a parallel in the study’s examined silver figurine, where a pregnant woman, arms embracing her protruding belly, is wearing what appears to be a helmet with a noseguard. While we are careful not to present simplified narratives about pregnant warrior women, we must acknowledge that at least in art and stories, ideas were circulating about pregnant women with martial equipment. These are not passive, or pacified, pregnant bodies.”

  7. For the prudent and thrifty child in your life, a moneybox always goes down well. And if your child is a little fashionista, you might consider a fancy imported one like this made from French Santoinge pottery. Found in 13th century levels at Wood Quay, Dublin.

  8. Musical instruments are always a popular toy (for someone else's children).

These bone flutes & buzzbones would make quite a racket! The buzzbones had a cord thread through the hole and twisted, when the cord was pulled it rotated the bone, producing a loud buzz.

  9. Of course not only humans like to play with toys!

Like this wonderful wooden figure of a wolf playing with a ball found in Viking-Age levels during excavations at Fishamble Street, Dublin.

  10. As long as there have been children, there have been toys. As it's the #LateLateToyShow I thought I'd share some of my favourite toys in the National Museum of Ireland.

Many toys through history copy adult life, like this wonderful toy boat and sword from Viking Dublin. You can just imagine the little child dreaming of being a warrior!
