  13. 1/ This is my last day doing the socials for #VikingDublinDogs ( and what a week it's been!) So we are reaching the end of Phase 1 of crowdfunding and I thought I'd offer a bit of an overview of the equine side. The funds raised to date will be going for radiocarbon dates of dogs, the most important ones, as some may be earlier or later than Viking Ireland. So, here's a hint of Phase 2....trot on!

  14. #AWOOOO We hear from our Guardian, Nala and her person Dermot Cosgrove, in today's new Bite-sized Treat. A fun day in Nala's life! #VikingDublinDogs

  15. @VikingDublinDogs 2/2 These naming rights are fun way to get directly involved with our project and follow your dogs' on their journeys of discovery. Please help us on our last week of crowdfunding. We need 6 of these to fund 1 radiocarbon date, which we need badly. Please RT. #VikingDublinDogs

  16. #AWOOOO!!! @StillJustRena will be posting this coming week from our account, bringing in horses into our horse-dog investigatoins amongst other goodies. Stay tuned. I'll (Ruth) be in/out during the week with a few posts. Enjoy your week & our last crowdfunder week. #VikingDublinDogs

  17. #AWOOOO! New Bite-sized Treat from our own artist-in-residence, John Flynn, bringing this amazing art interpretations to #VikingDublinDogs. Check it out ... vikingdublindogs.ie/post/art-a

  18. <ends> Many thanks to the wonderful and insightful Mary Valante, historian over in North Carolina, USA and Researcher Pack member of #VikingDublinDogs for her wonderful tweets this week. Asking some of the questions we will be investigating on our wonderful cutting edge project. I (Ruth) will be tipping in over this weekend with some exciting news, before the amazing @StillJustRena takes over next week. Enjoy your Friday evenings! #AWOOOO

  19. First up, this week I’ve looked at law codes, sagas, tales, artwork, archaeology, and modern scholarship. What did I miss? And more importantly, what are YOU working on when it comes to early medieval animals? I'll retweet/signal boost your work. (2/2) #VikingDublinDogs

  20. Another thread #VikingDublinDogs Mary Valante (and Hooch, whose Viking Dogs bandana is in the wash) back again, looking at some of what we know about dogs from Viking-Age urban environments, starting with Kaupang.

  21. But in the sagas, guard dogs are mentioned most often. Sámr from Njals Saga is supposed to be an Irish doggo! See Rebecca Boyd’s #VikingDublinDogs Bite-sized Treat post on Sámr here: vikingdublindogs.ie/post/sámr-

  22. As uiu can see from Mary’s posts this week we know a little information about dogs in Viking-Age and Medieval Ireland and Britain, but lots more to find out using cutting edge scientific techniques& analysis. We are still running our Crowdfunder to help with costs vikingdublindogs.ie/category/a Or make a donation on our Welcome page Buy Me a Coffee near the end. All donations/support will go to radiocarbon dating. Thank you. Please retoot. #VikingDublinDogs & #horses

  23. Dog #7, Chancery Lane, Dublin city, Ireland. On the River Poddle, excavated by Alan Hayden. A nice near complete large-type dog skull. #VikingDublinDogs #dogs #zooarchaeology - Ruth

  24. Horse #3, Newtown, Co. Dublin, Ireland. A partial front part of the lower jaw with very worn incisor teeth and the canines are broken off. Just visible are the chop/cleaver impact marks between the two halves - removal of the tongue. #horse #vikingdublindogs

  25. Sometimes all you get is a tooth of an animal from a particular area or context within an excavation. Like this canine tooth, Dog#6 Newtown, Co. Dublin, Ireland. Excavated by IAC Archaeology. But we can gain so much info even from one tooth - date, diet, origins etc. #VikingDogs #vikingdublindogs

  26. Dog #5 is also from Newtown, Co. Dublin hinterland site. Just a partial humerus fore leg bone and a partial lower jaw with some teeth. This site did yield a lot of dog skeletal remains. These dogs tend to be in the medium to larger type ranges. #VikingDublinDogs #zooarch #dogs

  31. With our project we are also investigating Viking-Age and Medieval #horses and their relationships between them and humans and dogs. This is a phalanx or toe bone from horse #1 from Chancery Lane, Dublin City, Ireland. #VikingDublinDogs

  32. Dog#4 out of the boxes, from Chancery Lane, Dublin City (adjacent to the Poddle). Excavated by Alan Hayden. Partial remains of a skull, lower jaw, humerus (front leg bone) and atlas, neck vertebra. #VikingDublinDogs #dogs

  33. Detail of the teeth from large type Dog#3 from Newtown, Co. Dublin, Ireland. Note the worn teeth (dark patches of dentine where the enamel has worn off) from this adult dog. 2/2 #VikingDublinDogs #dogs

  34. Newtown, Dog#3, a partial skull, ribs, some vertebrae, partial foreleg bones (scapulae, humerus, radius and ulna). This is a large type dog from this hinterland Dublin site. Perhaps a guard dog? 1/2 #VikingDublinDogs #dogs

  35. The Newtown site is a hinterland site, out in the landscape at some distance away from the heart of Dublin City within the old city walls. This site and it’s dogs will provide a good contrast to the urban (within the walls) sites. This large dog was perhaps a farm working dog? #VikingDublinDogs #zooarchaeology #dogs

  36. First up out of the boxes is the partial remains of an adult male dog from Newtown, Co. Dublin, Ireland. Commercial site excavated by IAC Archaeology. Here we see partial skull, baculum, tail bones (2 fused together & 1 other), hind leg bone & partial pelvis. #VikingDublinDogs

  37. Alas, the spider infested bone shed has to wait due to rain (& my fear). But fear not … Irish archaeology and #VikingDublinDogs #dog bones won’t be stopped in their tracks for I have phoned a friend for help for Wednesday afternoon. Pray the rain gods hold their water!!! Pray the large spiders go away! #zooarchaeology #spiderfear #TheFear

  38. - stable isotopes, bone measurements analysis and aDNA, will be so informative about Irish & British dogs from a time we know little about dogs from, & their roles in human societies during, Viking-Age & Medieval periods. #VikingDublinDogs #JoinThePack

  39. #AWOOOOO Fantastic news! We were awarded some funding from the National Monuments Service, Ireland for our #VikingDublinDogs project - enough to date at least 15 dogs. Brilliant! We are over the moon and many many thanks to National Monuments Service on behalf of us all. #dogs #JoinThePack
