  6. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜’𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗴𝗲𝗲𝘀" 𝗯𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗵 𝗡𝗴𝘂𝘆𝗲𝗻 -

A collection of short stories of immigration, assimilation, and family. Apparently written across 20 years, it will be interesting to see, too, how Nguyen's viewpoints and style shifted over that time!

Since I recently finished his short story collection 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘨𝘦𝘦𝘴, I thought it a good time to grab his biggest title to date about post-Vietnam War subterfuge and conscience.

  9. #Palestine / BDS: a writer's dilemma amidst Gaza genocide

Viet Thanh Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American writer, recently clarified his stance on the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Despite the publication of his short story collection "The Refugees" in Hebrew by an Israeli publisher, Nguyen reaffirmed his support for BDS, a movement he initially endorsed in 2016 [usacbi.org/2016/06/viet-thanh-] . He signed a call to boycott Israeli cultural institutions complicit in violating Palestinian rights [palfest.org/press-release-refu] , a decision that followed the October 2023 Israeli assault on Gaza, which resulted in the deaths of over 45,000 Palestinians and injuries to more than 106,000 others.

  10. Book 27: “The Sympathizer” by #VietThanhNguyen.

Came to this one late: I remember when everybody seemed to be reading or talking about it. Really enjoyed Nguyen’s immigrant short stories in “The Refugees”. This is much more politically sophisticated as the title says, but not what I expected. Nor did it go where I thought it would—more espionage than I normally like. While the sequel is also on my list, the TV show isn’t anymore. Too dude-focused.

Viet Thanh Nguyen on Being Canceled Over Palestine: What if those were your people in Gaza?

In this episode of #FridayNightSemites, we sit down with Pulitzer Prize-winning author and professor Viet Thanh Nguyen, acclaimed for his book The Sympathizer (now a brilliant show on HBO Max). We discuss his experience of being canceled for speaking out for a ceasefire after October 7 and his thoughts on boycotting other artists—even those he strongly disagrees with. Viet opens up about the backlash he’s faced for standing in solidarity with Palestine, and we explore the myths, propaganda, and language shaping public perception of the Middle East.

He dives into his political differences within the Vietnamese-American community, how the U.S. treats immigrants versus refugees, and offers advice to young writers on creating political art during times of war and crisis. We also cover the broader themes of decolonization, anti-Semitism, and the colonial origins of how we talk about the Middle East. This is a no-holds-barred conversation on solidarity, history, and speaking truth to power when the stakes are high.

Whether you’re interested in the politics of Palestine, anti-colonialism, or how to navigate controversial conversations in the literary and academic world, this episode is for you. Join us as we unpack these critical issues with honesty and a bit of humor—because if we don’t laugh, we’ll cry.

Watch the full #interview now, and don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share for more conversations on the Middle East, decolonization, and beyond.
