When Americans talk about foreign films it is usually a short-hand for movies that has dialog in a #language other than #English (which at times has included Australian films - e.g. the original Mad Max).
What is surprising is that many people in other countries have vaguely the same definition (excepting their own language). So in an #Icelandic #VideoStore the majority of titles were in English and then a section for "foreign films". Of course there are so few Icelandic films that a shelf was enough for those. Kids films were the only ones which were dubbed so that was another section entirely.
The ubiquity of #Hollywood made English language films into a separate category, not domestic, not foreign.
We used to have Icelandic titles for every film, including #Hollywood stuff. So Jaws was known as "Ókindin" which is actually fantastic because it sort of means "not a sheap" (though the real meaning is monster). Then there came a point when most people (at least the movie-going ones) understood what Lethal Weapon meant so it was silly to refer to it as "Tveir á Toppnum" (two on the top). We often did pronounce things with an Icelandic tilt so I sometimes slip into a weird accent when referring to films such as Terminator (Ter-mean-ah-tor with rolling Rs).
The side is was that many "international" films are known primarily by their English titles. I have no idea what is the original title of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and we didn't really use an Icelandic one. If I know the original it is because it was known by that title in the USA. So I known Rashomon and Yojimbo (but not Rashōmon or Yōjinbō). I do try to combat this tendency of mine by using the original or an Icelandic translation but I often end up having to clarify my meaning by using the English title.
If I had a point I would add it here but I am basically thinking by writing. Sorry to disappoint you.
