  1. Videoconference community servers

The open Jitsi Meet instances I was using for community videocalls all require a login, now.

Are there any videoconferencing community servers that are still open, or where I could ask to have an account?

The last thing I want to do is self-host a video conferencing software, unless it’s something simple and light.

Also: has anyone been trying other software solutions beyond BigBlueButton and Jitsi Meet? Happy to test reliable alternatives you recommend.

  5. Hi mastopeople,

I need help to have working screen sharing on my #debian laptop inside a #videoconference tab in #firefox or #chrome.
I'm sure it broke since I switched to #Sway on #Wayland.
I'm not sure if the browsers run natively or with Xwayland (they are not listed in `xlsclients`)

Any help appreciated, the simpler and more standard the better, I don't want to start downloading untrusted tools or compile things…

    Please RT

  10. Movim 0.34 is out but I'm already back to work 😸

Currently investigating the #Galene video-conference server to see how it can be integrated in Movim properly.

It's a very interesting piece of software 👌

Thanks @nlnet to allow me spending time on that!

  12. I thought the main selling point of Jitsi Meet was to be independent of big tech.

But trying to test it now for the first time in a long time, it seems that in order to set up a video conference there you have to log in via a Google or Microsoft account!?

How does that make any sense?

I am HOPELESS at AV stuff, but I help administer a little art/photo crit group.

We started out meeting on Zoom and that has an inbuilt tool to screen record. In our efforts to try and stick it to the corporate stiffs we migrated to Jitsi.

Since then I have never made a successful screen recording.

I have done one that was silent (I think with Quicktime), a second that was silent but using the inbuilt mac screen software. Another was entirely black (not from using Incognito mode) and the last was just a 2 hour recording of my face (this was Jitsi in the browser using the record function but it just used my camera).

Years ago I do recall using Soundflower to help change input/output for audio. I also have CleanShot. but I think my problem is the audio input/output.

    TL; DR
How do I screen record via the browser on a Mac. And treat me like I am 6. I need it super simple. Is there a way to toggle the audio easily?

    TIA

  16. Visio -- part of La Suite -- the French public administration office suite.

I was looking for an alt text for the image, but there is none, otherwise I would have tried my luck at writing this in French.

Sidenote: The site seems to be using non-french Tailwind CSS 😅 .

  21. At the start of the pandemic, I had been already working from home for about six years and was very comfortable with the video meetings.

The majority of the company was new to it though, and they were doing video calls for the first time due to offices temporarily closed for the plague. When I attended some meeting outside of my usual group it was a revelation for many that you could have fun with it.

Most didn't know about having custom backgrounds, for instance.

  22. Tested Jitsi (meet.jit.si) today. Very good A+V experience, with individual volumes per participant. Also features screen sharing, whiteboard, reactions. Sounds like a good #videoconference tool for online #ttrpg.

  26. #^Galene videoconference server

    Galene videoconference server

Galene is a videoconference server that is easy to host and that requires very moderate server resources. It was originally designed for lectures, conferences and student tutorials, but later turned out to be useful for traditional meetings. Galene has been used in production at two major universities (Université de Paris and Sorbonne Université) for lectures, practicals, seminars, and for staff meetings. It has been used to host a number of conferences (including SOCS'2020, JFLA'2021 and LibrePlanet 2024).

Galene's server side is implemented in Go, and uses the Pion implementation of WebRTC. The server is portable: it is tested on Linux/amd64 and Linux/arm64, and also runs on Linux/armv7, Linux/mips (OpenWRT), Mac OS X, and Windows. The default client is implemented in Javascript, and works on recent versions of all major web browsers, both on desktop and mobile (but see the FAQ for caveats with specific browsers).

  31. I've been loving Element Matrix video chat for a few months now. I regularly have video chats with my family, including 4 or 5 video connections from various remote locations for 3 or 4 hours each. Also, it's proved pretty easy to start video chatting with people that I meet on Mastodon in a privacy preserving way.

  35. People who participate in online meetings using platforms like Zoom may want to pay closer attention to how their computer microphone alters the sound of their voice.
That's because high-quality audio can make the speaker seem more attractive and convincing to others, according to results published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. @npr reports:
