  1. I thought the main selling point of Jitsi Meet was to be independent of big tech.

But trying to test it now for the first time in a long time, it seems that in order to set up a video conference there you have to log in via a Google or Microsoft account!?

How does that make any sense?

I am HOPELESS at AV stuff, but I help administer a little art/photo crit group.

We started out meeting on Zoom and that has an inbuilt tool to screen record. In our efforts to try and stick it to the corporate stiffs we migrated to Jitsi.

Since then I have never made a successful screen recording.

I have done one that was silent (I think with Quicktime), a second that was silent but using the inbuilt mac screen software. Another was entirely black (not from using Incognito mode) and the last was just a 2 hour recording of my face (this was Jitsi in the browser using the record function but it just used my camera).

Years ago I do recall using Soundflower to help change input/output for audio. I also have CleanShot. but I think my problem is the audio input/output.

    TL; DR
How do I screen record via the browser on a Mac. And treat me like I am 6. I need it super simple. Is there a way to toggle the audio easily?

    TIA

  7. I've been loving Element Matrix video chat for a few months now. I regularly have video chats with my family, including 4 or 5 video connections from various remote locations for 3 or 4 hours each. Also, it's proved pretty easy to start video chatting with people that I meet on Mastodon in a privacy preserving way.

  8. I tried to set up a Galene server this morning on a disposable instance on a cloud provider. The web interface failed on every call. Forbidden on the root page, not found on others. Even the TURN server didn't work. That was supposed to be easier than my previous self-hosted try, but it was worse!

  9. @ForestOrca @arstechnica Seconded!

I've been using Jitsi for years. Overall it's a pretty great substitute for Skype/Zoom/Teams for my use cases (2-3 people video chat - occasional screen sharing).

  10. Network Fun

I had 15 minutes to go until a meeting with a customer. Not just any meeting, but a meeting where I was going to have to present something to them. Now I don’t talk to customers directly. It’s not in my job description. That being said, we’re all in this together and we are all one big happy team, and if the folks who usually do talk to the customers directly are tied up in other things I am happy to pitch in. Happy yes, stress free? Hell no.

The information I needed to present would, best case scenario, involve two, maybe three sentences and that was it. If they asked me questions I told the people I was covering for that I would panic quietly and then mumble responses until they stopped asking. I was kidding, of course. I didn’t expect any questions. I expected my speaking time to be wrapped up in a manner of seconds. Still… yikes.

Then that happy moment, about 15 minutes before the meeting… when our entire network went down. Oh… no… now what do we do??

I wasn’t going to be able to join the call… potentially neither was any of the other 50-70 or so people who were scheduled to represent my company… and we had no way of letting each other know, and no way of letting the customer know. What do we do?

One guy in my building who fortunately sits near me found a work around and yelled it out. Everyone else yelled it out too. I got onto the call with seconds to spare, then waited about 20 minutes for my turn to speak, then spoke my two sentences and asked for questions and there were none.

Oh, what a relief that was. Over and done.

After that I spent two hours on another meeting and now I am going to spend the next 90 minutes on yet another meeting. What a thrill! I just want to go home and go to bed.
