  1. Videoconference community servers

    The open Jitsi Meet instances I was using for community videocalls all require a login, now.

    Are there any videoconferencing community servers that are still open, or where I could ask to have an account?

    The last thing I want to do is self-host a video conferencing software, unless it’s something simple and light.

    Also: has anyone been trying other software solutions beyond BigBlueButton and Jitsi Meet? Happy to test reliable alternatives you recommend.

  6. WhatsApp Clone, but Decentralized with P2P Messaging

    App: Enkrypted.Chat

    "Secure and private" is the general goal.

    This is a technical/concept demo of a fairly unique approach using a browser-based, local-first and webrtc.

    This is intended to introduce a new paradigm in client-side managed secure cryptography. We can avoid registration of any sort.

    Features:

    * P2P
    * End to end encryption
    * Signal protocol
    * Post-Quantum cryptography
    * File transfer
    * Local-first
    * No registration
    * No installation
    * No database
    * TURN server

    Feel free to reach out for clarity instead of diving into the docs/code.

    IMPORTANT: While this is aiming to provide a secure experience, it isnt audited or reviewed. **Shared for testing, feedback and demo purposes only.** Please use responsibly.

    Continuing to look for an alternative to "attachment" (for properly supporting an Actor specifying a list of CALL Service actors associated with it) —

    Maybe a call specific custom top-level attribute would be useful.

    Maybe something like:

    "call": [
    {
    "rel":"callpub",
    "href":"https://videocalls.example/users/joeblow"
    }
    ]

    Or even:

    "call": [

    I think "endpoints" would also be a poor choice, too. Again, the semantics are wrong, or at least lacking.

    Looking for an alternative to "attachment" (for properly supporting an Actor specifying a list of Service actors associated with it) —

    I think using "alsoKnownAs" or "sameAs" would be a poor choice. The semantics are wrong.

    For example: a Service actor might represent my mobile phone (or software on it). My phone is not me. It is something I have.

    But, what about the non- fall-back situation where software could properly support this (when an Actor specifies a list of Service actors associated with it)‽

    I think some might say, put the associated Service actors in "attachment". And, semantically I think that would work with ActivityPub, but — I have a very strong dislike with putting everything in "attachment" (and "tag"). It makes parsing difficult.

  24. 2/

    Because most people wouldn't be able to add custom attributes or custom values to most Fediverse software (including Mastodon) —

    Most supporting software would probably want to support a "PropertyValue" link in "attachment" field as a fall-back

    For example:

    "attachment": [
    {
    "type": "PropertyValue",
    "name": "Video Calls (callpub)",
    "value": "https://videocalls.example/users/joeblow"

    AFAIK, there isn't a way for an ActivityPub Actor (such as a Person actor) to specify a list of Service actors associated with it.

    ...

    For example, imagine that there is a Service actor that represents a way to make a video call to me.

    And, for example, I have my Mastodon Person actor.

    And, I want to let people know about it (and other Service actors associated with me).

    How do I do that using AP, etc‽

  30. I have never done a video chat before on any device.

    This mastodon thing is as public as I've ever been online... but I have to do a zoom call tomorrow and I'm not excited about it.

    Now I have to learn zoom and figure out which device I want to compromise... then wipe and reconfigure.

    Not excited at all about putting my face on an AI powered server.

    I got a face for radio and a voice for silent movies... but maybe this will be the catalyst to me going public.

    Secure decentralized P2P messaging PWA

    Progress update:

    - UI improvements throughout
    - Passkey-based encrypted data at rest.
    - Introducing giphy integration
    - Bug fixes throughout

    NOTE: This is still a work-in-progress and a close-source project. Its far from finished and doesnt have the user-experience needed to promote the project to a wider audience. The implementation is based on the open source MVP seen here: github.com/positive-intentions. It has NOT been audited or reviewed. For testing purposes only, not a replacement for your current messaging app.
