Il 9 maggio è il Giorno della Vittoria dell’Unione Sovietica sul nazismo, la festa per eccellenza più sentita dai russi, quando tutti i pensieri sono rivolti ai caduti, all’immenso impegno dei civili e dei militari sovietici nella Seconda Guerra mondiale. Una data però dimenticata dall’Occidente, perché?
La vittoria sul nazismo è un avvenimento che riguarda tutti senza eccezione, ma perché il 9 maggio non viene né celebrato né ricordato in Europa?— Professor Barbero, perché secondo lei il cinema e la narrazione mediatica occidentale dominante fanno apparire spesso e volentieri gli americani come i veri e soli liberatori? Un esempio su tutti è il film "La vita è bella" di Benigni dove a liberare Aushwitz sono gli americani.
— È un caso abbastanza vergognoso di come la storia sia stata comunicata e stravolta da un punto di vista ideologico e politico. Gli studiosi e gli specialisti lo sanno benissimo che la Seconda Guerra mondiale in Europa è stata vinta innanzitutto dall'Unione Sovietica e che il peso di questa vittoria è molto superiore rispetto a quella americana. Questo lo sanno gli specialisti, al popolo si racconta una storia diversa.
Ciò avviene secondo me perché tutti noi siamo cresciuti in un mondo diviso. In Occidente l'Unione Sovietica è diventata un nemico e ricordarsi che eravamo stati alleati era difficile.— Perché?
— Scomponiamo la vicenda. Prima viene il mito americano. Noi in Occidente siamo effettivamente stati liberati dagli americani, che sono stati accolti con immenso entusiasmo. Fa parte proprio dei nostri presupposti immaginare la liberazione da parte degli americani, noi inoltre viviamo in un mondo dominato dai media americani, dalla memorialistica e dal cinema americani. Ricordiamo i film come "Il giorno più lungo" o il più recente "Salvate il soldato Rian". Lo sbarco in Normandia fa parte dell'immaginario collettivo e rappresenta la vittoria del bene contro il male. Invece la battaglia di Stalingrado è un'altra cosa.
— Cioè?
— Innanzitutto si svolge in un mondo lontano e poco conosciuto. Inoltre da una parte c'è il male, i tedeschi, ma dall'altra c'è pure il male: l'Unione sovietica di Stalin. Nella percezione occidentale quindi tuttora è molto difficile vedere quello scontro come un episodio dove i buoni vincono contro i cattivi. Abbiamo visto film di guerra americani da sempre, nessuno da noi vede film da guerra sovietici. La letteratura russa e sovietica è una letteratura grandiosa, ma da noi non la conosce nessuno a parte pochi autori.
Ci troviamo totalmente nella bolla di origine americana e della storia vediamo solo dei pezzi, tanto che Benigni, girando il suo film, ha semplicemente pensato: se la liberazione si manifesta con delle truppe sovietiche la gente non capirà! La gente è abituata a vedere le truppe sovietiche con una certa diffidenza.
— Qual è l'importanza del 9 maggio però anche per la stessa Europa?
— Celebrare la sconfitta contro il nazismo in tutto il mondo dovrebbe voler dire celebrare la vittoria della libertà e della democrazia. In questo senso è molto triste che in Occidente il Giorno della Vittoria sia completamente dimenticato.
C'è anche un altro aspetto: secondo me il 9 maggio si celebra anche in chiave nazionalista la potenza e la gloria della Russia. Questo aspetto non è in sintonia con la cultura europea di oggi. L'Europa è un mondo dove non si ha tanta voglia di sventolare bandiere e ricordare guerre. Quando un generale ha il petto coperto di medaglie in Europa non è percepito come una cosa piacevole. Il veterano coperto di medaglie è una figura che si vede soltanto in Unione sovietica e in Russia infatti.Quando un Paese esalta la propria gloria non piace. In Europa si è abituati a ritenere ogni parata militare sulla Piazza Rossa infatti come negativa, pericolosa e nemica. Fin qui parlo di una percezione occidentale, si può dire anche sbagliata, perché non vediamo il lato gioioso della parata.
— Che messaggio vorrebbe lanciare per questo 9 maggio?
— Indubbiamente la Seconda Guerra mondiale è stata vinta innanzitutto dall'Unione Sovietica in Europa. Una delle cose positive che dobbiamo ricordare della Seconda Guerra mondiale è che Paesi così lontani e ostili come gli Stati Uniti, la Gran Bretagna e l'Unione Sovietica sono stati capaci di allearsi e collaborare, questa è la cosa più bella.
Non c'è niente di male a dire che l'Unione Sovietica ha vinto anche grazie ad un forte appoggio occidentale, grazie alle forniture di armi. Guai a dimenticare però che la Wermacht è stata distrutta in Russia e non altrove, i tedeschi hanno sempre impegnato i tre quarti delle loro forze sul fronte russo, e che sono stati i russi ad arrivare a Berlino. Dal punto di vista militare il contributo sovietico è assolutamente decisivo, forse l'Unione Sovietica da sola però non avrebbe vinto.
Alla fine è importante celebrare il contributo sovietico specialmente di fronte ad un'opinione pubblica occidentale che rischia di dimenticarlo. Nel mondo di oggi la cosa che andrebbe inoltre ricordata è che l'abbiamo fatto insieme.
