Un día como hoy nació uno de los más grandes músicos chilenos de todos los tiempos que ha inspirado a muchos artistas alrededor del mundo. Un idealista que fue asesinado por la dictadura cívico militar. Víctor Jara, nacido el 28 de Septiembre de 1932.

Somos Cinco Mil

El último poema de Víctor Jara escrito mientras estaba detenido por agentes de la dictadura civico-militar en el Estadio Chile (ahora Estadio Víctor Jara). Jara fue asesinado de 44 tiros el 16 de septiembre de 1973, luego de haber sido torturado. El poema logró ser rescatado y conservado gracias a la ayuda de otros detenidos.

Somos cinco mil aquí.
En esta pequeña parte de la ciudad.
Somos cinco mil.
¿Cuántos somos en total en las ciudades y en todo el país?
Somos aquí diez mil manos que siembran y hacen andar las fábricas.

¡Cuánta humanidad con hambre, frío, pánico, dolor, presión moral, terror y locura!
Seis de los nuestros se perdieron en el espacio de las estrellas. Un muerto, un golpeado como jamás creí se podría golpear a un ser humano.
Los otros cuatro quisieron quitarse todos los temores, uno saltando al vacío, otro golpeándose la cabeza contra el muro, pero todos con la mirada fija de la muerte.

¡Qué espanto causa el rostro del fascismo!
Llevan a cabo sus planes con precisión artera sin importarles nada.
La sangre para ellos son medallas.
La matanza es acto de heroísmo.

¿Es éste el mundo que creaste, Dios mío?
¿Para esto tus siete días de asombro y trabajo?

En estas cuatro murallas sólo existe un número que no progresa.
Que lentamente querrá la muerte.

Pero de pronto me golpea la consciencia

y veo el pulso de las máquinas
y los militares mostrando su rostro de matrona lleno de dulzura.

¿Y México, Cuba, y el mundo?

La sangre del Compañero Presidente
golpea más fuerte que bombas y metrallas.

September 11, 1973 - Chile's armed forces staged a coup d'etat against the government of President Salvador Allende, the first democratically elected socialist head of state in Latin America. Some three thousand were held in Santiago's national stadium where guards singled out folksinger Victor Jara as he continued to sing protest songs. Jara was viciously beaten, and his mutilated body machine-gunned in front of the other prisoners.

The U.S. government, through the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), had worked for three years to foment the coup against Allende. Striking Chilean labor unions, instrumental in destabilizing the Allende government, were secretly bankrolled by the CIA.

During the brutal and repressive 17-year rule of General Augusto Pinochet that followed, more than 3,000 political opponents were assassinated or "disappeared." The U.S.-backed military dictatorship banned Jara's music, image, name and, for a time, even outlawed the public performance of the folk-guitar.

In the regime of terror that ensured, thousands of people were killed. Many more simply “disappeared”. Firing squads conducted public executions. Concentration camps and torture chambers were opened across the country. The dead were buried in mine shafts and unmarked graves. For seventeen years the people of Chile lived in dread of the midnight knock, of routine “disappearances”, of sudden arrest and torture. Chileans tell the story of how the musician Victor Jara had his hands cut off in front of a crowd in the Santiago stadium. Before they shot him, Pinochet’s soldiers threw his guitar at him and mockingly asked him to play.
.> In 1999, following the arrest of General Pinochet in Britain, thousands of secret documents were declassified by the U.S. government. They contain unequivocal evidence of the CIA’s involvement in the coup as well as the fact that the U.S. government had detailed information about the situation in Chile during General Pinochet’s reign. Yet, Kissinger assured the general of his support: “In the United States as you know, we are sympathetic to what you’re trying to do,” he said. “We wish your government well.”

.> The Chilean military junta began with the same zeal as its Indonesian counterpart of eight years earlier. In Jakarta, religious Muslim cadres almost immediately joined the killing and torture, while in Santiago; it was conservative Christendom, particularly Opus Dei, which threw its support behind the murderers and rapists of General Pinochet. In both places ‘conservative family values’ were evoked, to justify the most appalling atrocities.
.> The streets of Santiago and other Chilean cities fell silent. Horror was omnipresent. Doors were kicked open by military boots and people dragged to dungeons, tortured, raped, murdered.
.> The National Stadium was filled with men and women. Like in Jakarta, noble, educated people were tortured and beaten, even killed with absolutely no scruples.
