SWANSEA: Nine parks and green spaces named among the best in Wales — as Botanical Gardens marks its centenary
Nine of Swansea’s parks and green spaces have once again been named among the best in Wales.
The list spans the whole city. In the west, Clyne Gardens — famous for its spring rhododendron and azalea displays — keeps its flag alongside Brynmill Park and, out at Penllergare Valley Woods, the restored Victorian landscape near junction 47 of the M4.
The lake at Brynmill Park (Image: Swansea Council)In and around Singleton Park, both the Botanical and Ornamental Gardens and Swansea University’s Singleton Campus retained their status, as did nearby Cwmdonkin Park — the Uplands green space immortalised by Dylan Thomas.

The Green Flag Award is an international mark handed to parks and green spaces that meet the highest standards — judged on being safe, clean, well looked after and welcoming.
The winners were announced today by Keep Wales Tidy, which runs the scheme in Wales with support from the Welsh Government.
A further 13 volunteer-run green spaces across Swansea picked up Green Flag Community Awards — the tier that recognises allotments, community gardens and local nature reserves.
Among them was Kilvey Community Woodland, which earned its first community award last year after decades of volunteer care.
The awards are a repeat success for the city, which saw the same run of parks recognised last year.
Both Penllergare Valley Woods and the Singleton Campus were again given Green Heritage Site Accreditation — a supplementary award, backed by Cadw, for sites that also protect and promote their history.
Keep Wales Tidy said just 14 sites across the whole of Wales hold that heritage accreditation, making two in Swansea a notable haul.
This year’s recognition for the Botanical and Ornamental Gardens carries extra weight, landing as the much-loved gardens mark their 100th birthday.
Owen Derbyshire, chief executive of Keep Wales Tidy, said he was delighted to see so many Swansea green spaces recognised, from flagship parks and woodlands to community gardens, farms and a university campus.
“Green spaces play a vital role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our communities,” he said, thanking everyone involved in caring for the sites.
Cllr Andrew Stevens, Swansea Council’s cabinet member for environment and infrastructure, said the city was “blessed with some beautiful parks which we are proud of and work hard to maintain.”
“They all provide a space where families and visitors can relax, have fun and enjoy the outdoors,” he said. “I’m thrilled that these locations have been recognised on a national level.”
He said the accolade for the Botanical Gardens was “especially welcome” in its centenary year, and that free access to parks supported families through the cost of living and helped protect nature across the city.
Keep Wales Tidy said 93 sites across Wales achieved full Green Flag status this year, with Wales holding more Green Flag Community Awards than any other country running the scheme worldwide for the third year running.

For Martin Jones, who has been skateboarding for more than 30 years, the new plaza at Victoria Park is the one Swansea’s riders have been waiting for.
“In the early 90s, all we had for skateboarding was Castle Gardens and the streets,” he said.
The street-plaza style facility opened recently and is already drawing skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter users and roller skaters in large numbers.
It is the standout site in Swansea Council‘s £3 million investment in wheeled sports across the city — a programme that has also delivered upgraded parks at the Phoenix Centre in Townhill and Mynydd Newydd in Penlan.
Jones links the surge of interest to the sport’s rising profile since skateboarding made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games in 2021.
“There’s definitely been a resurgence in skate parks,” he said. “Swansea Council’s investment is fantastic — and Victoria Park is the jewel in the crown.”
“We’ve been waiting for this because Victoria Park is the hub of skateboarding in Swansea. To have something of this quality for everyone to use is brilliant.”
Celeste Pepper, six years into the sport, says the facility has already become part of her daily routine.
“I came to Swansea for the surf and skating scene and having this new facility is amazing — it’s top notch,” she said.
“It’s only just opened but it’s already incredibly popular. I’ve been here every day since it opened and some of the tricks I’ve seen have been crazy. It’s great to see this investment.”
Jason Thomas, who first stepped on a skateboard aged seven, said the atmosphere had been remarkable.
“I was here the day after it opened and it was amazing,” he said. “The range of people using it — from kids to adults, on skateboards, scooters, BMXs and roller skates — was awesome to see.”
He also praised the upgraded facility at Melin Mynach in Gorseinon, one of the sites completed earlier in the programme.
“It’s brilliant for the community and fantastic that there are more facilities ready, being built and planned across Swansea,” he said.
The Victoria Park, Phoenix Centre and Mynydd Newydd parks were designed by specialist firm Curve Studio, with the sites built by contractors Wheelscape, Bendcrete Leisure and Canvas Spaces.
They build on upgrades already completed at Coed Bach in Pontarddulais and Melin Mynach in Gorseinon, with more schemes planned across the city.
The council says the investment aims to put most Swansea residents within two miles of a new or upgraded wheeled sports facility.
The programme is funded through a mix of ward member funding, the council’s Community Investment Fund, contributions from community and town councils, and Welsh Government money through the active travel grant.

SWANSEA: Three more skateparks open as £3m wheeled sports drive rolls on
Skaters and BMX riders have wasted no time getting on three new wheeled sports parks that have just opened across Swansea.
The biggest is a street plaza-style park at Victoria Park, joined by upgraded sites at the Phoenix Centre in Townhill and Mynydd Newydd in Penlan.
All three were being ridden before anyone had cut a ribbon — the official openings aren’t due until later this summer.
They are the latest sites to land under Swansea Council‘s £3 million spend on skate, BMX and scooter facilities, a programme riders themselves pushed for over several years.
The council says the goal is to put most residents within two miles of somewhere to skate or ride.
The Victoria Park plaza is the standout. Work there has been tracked from the first diggers on site through to its promised spring opening, and it has now opened its gates.
The designs were drawn up by specialist firm Curve Studio, with the building work handed to contractors Wheelscape, Bendcrete Leisure and Canvas Spaces.
Cllr Andrew Stevens, the council’s cabinet member for environment and infrastructure, said the early turnout showed the parks were hitting the mark.
“This investment is about creating welcoming, high-quality places where people of all ages can be active, develop skills and enjoy modern facilities close to home,” he said.
Council leader Rob Stewart was also at Victoria Park to see the new plaza in use.
The three openings follow upgrades already finished at Coed Bach in Pontarddulais and Melin Mynach in Gorseinon.
They build on years of lobbying by local riders, who backed the spending as a way to grow the sport and give young people somewhere to go.
There is plenty still in the pipeline. A BMX-focused park is planned for the Elba sports complex in Gowerton, with a small cycling track in Blaen-y-maes, a new pump track in Bishopston and a refurbished one at Clyne Valley.
A junior pump track is lined up for Gorseinon and a skatepark for Ynystawe Park — both shown off in design form late last year.
Further schemes include dirt tracks at Coed Gwilym Park in Clydach and Coed Bach Park in Pontarddulais, plus pump tracks at Morriston Park, Heol Las Park in Birchgrove, Maesteg Park in St Thomas and the SA1 Prince of Wales Dock.
The whole drive sits inside the council’s wider £11m spend on play areas and recreation since the pandemic, paid for through ward budgets, the Community Investment Fund, town and community council money and Welsh Government active travel grants.
It all comes shortly after skaters, families and PCSOs got together for a community paint day at Mumbles skatepark, brightening up the ramps with their own designs.

There you go. Just a couple of weeks after fencing most of the Herston side of #Barrambin / #VictoriaPark, GIICA just sent an email to annonce they will close off even more: everything south of the #QUT campus, and around York's Hollow too. We're just left with a small area around the pump track.
No date, just "in the next few weeks".
Justification? "To ensure the safety of the community, residents and workers." Whatever that means. 🤷🏽
