SIP exige protección para periodistas amenazados

La SIP demandó seguridad y justicia ante amenazas contra periodistas que cubren crimen organizado. Piden justicia para Balderas y Chaparro.

La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) exigió al gobierno federal garantizar la seguridad de los periodistas Óscar Balderas y Luis Chaparro, quienes denunciaron amenazas de muerte tras publicar investigaciones sobre cárteles del narcotráfico. La organización pidió también una investigación exhaustiva para identificar a los responsables.

El pasado 4 de julio, Óscar Balderas, colaborador del diario Milenio, denunció vía redes sociales haber recibido tres llamadas intimidatorias desde un número privado. En dichos mensajes lo amenazaron con matarlo si continuaba sus investigaciones sobre crimen organizado.

Trayectorias reconocidas

Balderas ha trabajado en medios como Animal Político, Vice News, Univisión y MVS Noticias, y ha documentado las actividades del Cártel de Sinaloa y del CJNG. Según el periódico El Universal, sus coberturas lo han colocado en la mira de grupos criminales.

Dos días después, el 6 de julio, Luis Chaparro, reportero de Pie de Página, también denunció amenazas tras cubrir temas relacionados con el narcotráfico. Chaparro ha colaborado con Proceso, CNN y Vice News, con énfasis en el contexto violento de la frontera norte.

A pesar de los riesgos, ambos periodistas reafirmaron su compromiso con el periodismo de investigación y solicitaron visibilidad y respaldo social como mecanismos de protección ante futuras agresiones.

Reacción de la SIP

El presidente de la SIP, José Roberto Dutriz, director de La Prensa Gráfica de El Salvador, expresó su preocupación. Afirmó que las amenazas contra Balderas y Chaparro representan el peligro extremo que enfrentan los periodistas en México, donde el ejercicio informativo ha cobrado vidas.

Martha Ramos, directora editorial de la Organización Editorial Mexicana (OEM) y presidenta de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa de la SIP, exhortó a las autoridades mexicanas a investigar de forma “rápida, imparcial y rigurosa” los casos de amenazas y agresiones contra periodistas.

La SIP insistió en que visibilizar estos hechos ayuda a proteger a quienes ejercen el periodismo crítico y comprometido. Además, pidió a los medios de comunicación mantenerse solidarios y activos frente a cualquier ataque que busque silenciar la información.

Dos asesinatos recientes

Los casos de Balderas y Chaparro ocurrieron en un contexto marcado por la violencia contra periodistas y creadores de contenido. El 9 de julio, fue asesinado Ronald Paz Pedro, en Acapulco, Guerrero, minutos después de realizar una transmisión en vivo en su página NotiExpress, donde documentaba denuncias vecinales.

Dos días antes, el 7 de julio, el periodista Ángel Sevilla, director del portal Noticias 644, falleció en Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, tras recibir disparos cuando cubría un ataque armado. En ambos casos, la SIP inició el proceso de documentación para determinar si sus actividades periodísticas motivaron los homicidios.

Contexto de violencia persistente

Organizaciones internacionales han alertado que México continúa siendo uno de los países más peligrosos para ejercer el periodismo. Solo en 2024, al menos ocho periodistas fueron asesinados, varios de ellos tras haber reportado sobre crimen organizado o corrupción local.

En ese marco, la SIP reiteró su llamado a las autoridades mexicanas para que actúen con firmeza y eviten la impunidad. “El silencio no puede ser el precio de informar”, subrayó Dutriz.

A través de sus diferentes comités, la SIP mantendrá un monitoreo de los casos de Óscar Balderas y Luis Chaparro, así como del seguimiento legal de los asesinatos recientes de comunicadores en el país. –sn–
