For #VGCMay2025 I played #Metroid Samus Returns on my #Nintendo #3DS, it was my first time taking part in #VideoGameClub, I usually limit myself to vote on the polls and then get mad the game I wanted didn't win (LOL), tried to shake things up this time and had a lot of fun!

Samus Returns is a pretty good game all things considered, specially for newcomers like myself, I first tried playing Metroid II and got frustrated after like 5 minutes, my sense of orientation is pretty bad 😅

Yeah, Area 2 clear in #SuperMetroidAscent!

This one has been a very challenging one, it required very fine tuned use of Samus' skillset, and some sections have required some pretty interesting out-of-the-box thinking.

I really look forward to see what does the final area of the game has in store for me, and hopefully I'll be able to finish the game on time for #VGCMay2025

These are the two romhacks I currently have for #SuperMetroid: SM Ascent and Hyper Metroid Super.

I'm pretty excited about trying both of them for #VGCMay2025, because I've often found very interesting ideas explored in this kind of hacks. Maybe not always the most solid execution, but the risky chances that a regular, commercial developer wouldn't take, and that's where a good part of the fun is!

Being the metroidvania fan that I am, I should definitely play something for #VGCMay2025

Since Ive already beaten all the regular Metroid games (not the Prime ones, but I'm not particularly interested in those at the moment), I think I'm going down the route of playing Hyper Metroid: Super, as recommended by @GamingWolf

Metroid Zero Mission is going well. I just beat a big fat dinosaur and have gotten several upgrades. Most of the time I feel like I'm just stumbling around with no idea what to do until I happen find my way into something. It is a very rewarding feeling to figure out some of these things though. This game still hasn't changed my dislike of platformers lol

Made some progress in Metroid Prime. Just beat Thardus and got rewarded with what I think is the only humoristic moment in the entire Metroid series. For whatever it's worth.

Well, I guess the last one is in captivity and the galaxy is at peace. 😅

2:29h isn't too bad. That got me all RetroAchievements except one: I somehow missed 5 Missile Containers.

I also did bomb the Metroid Queen's stomach for the first time. It's a pretty dangerous tactic, but it speeds up the fight drastically. I still don't understand why I sometimes got stuck in its mouth though. 🤔

Still having fun with #Metroid II - Samus' Return on the GameBoy. I'm now down to 3 Metroids and I've put down 2 Omega Metroids already. Surprisingly, I find them easier than the smaller evulation that comes before. The bigger Omegas stay put for longer, so you can hit them a few times with missiles, before they move. The smaller ones keep flying around the screen, so I ended up DPS racing them.

I love the soundtrack in the game. I like to think that Samus has a Walkman built into her power suit and the music we're hearing is diagetic, because she puts it on herself.

"Oh, it's just a tunnel going deeper into the planet. Let's put on I'm just chillin'." (Seriously, the title fits the music perfectly. Just try and sing it along.)

"Ooooh. This looks bad. Let's put on some creepy music."

"Nah, nevermind. I'm just chillin' it is."

"Gotta concentrate for a bit here."

I finished #ActRaiser, but it took me at least six tries to get through the final bit. Talk about a huge difficulty spike that late in the game.
Luckily the health bar of the final boss is only meant to be intimidating. Its attacks are easy to dodge and you hit like a brick when you hit it. 😁

I've now moved on to #Metroid Zero Mission for #VGCMay2025, where I made it just past Kraid. I have a bunch of unidentified stuff, which is intriguing. At first I thought that I had done some accidental sequence breaks, but you can tell from the level geometry that the game expects you to have these skills.

@scribblemacher Reading this thread led me to try Metroid II again as well. I played through it twice in the '90s, and I can't recall whether I've player it through again since. I replaced battery a few years ago, so I'm already starting from a fresh save.

Now I have my spouse's old Super Nintendo and Super Game Boy, so I have a new way to experience it!

The color scheme reminds me of CGA palettes, except I don't hate it.
