CW: Gross vet med stuff
Today was peacefully boring, which is a rare treat. And I got to clean a ridiculous amount of smegma from a mouse's prepuce, which was very satisfying. Guy was carrying around a bag of rocks down there. He has to feel better now.

We recently adopted a cat. He is a black cat, but his fur is ticked. It is black at the tips of the hairs but white at the bottoms.
It also is crimped / wavy; so are his whiskers. Is this similar to American Wirehair hair and whiskers? I looked for close-up images, but was unable to find any.

Just because you might be in need of an extra cup of #coffee today to keep up with daylight saving doesn't mean your #dogs and #cats do, too! ☕ Caffeine is toxic to them. If you suspect your #pet has ingested caffeine in some form, such as coffee grounds, an energy drink or supplement, contact your #vet ASAP or local ER. We provide 24/7 emergency care in #Waltham and #Boston. Learn more at https://www.mspca.org/emergency

Update: still snowing! ❄️ We hope everyone is staying safe out there! Quick reminder that our emergency hospitals in #Boston and #Waltham are open as always in the event your #pet is in need of care. Not only is it best to maintain the habit of giving the medication each month, but most heartworm preventatives protect your pet from a variety of parasites, no matter the season. Some also stand up to fleas/mites. To learn more about heartworm prevention, check out https://www.mspca.org/heartworm

Blood donations save lives - and #animals are no exception! 🩸 Not only is there a shortage of blood available across commercially-owned blood banks, but having a #community blood bank available at the MSPCA-Angell allows owners to advocate for their #pets in the donation process. If you're interested in learning more about how your #pet can help save lives in our community, visit https://www.mspca.org/bloodbank

For really pesky ulcerative dermatitis and self-trauma cases I like to break out the mortar and pestle and compound my own secret formula treatment (not actually secret, I'll happily tell you what's in it). I affectionately call it Dr. D's forbidden frosting.🧁

That feeling when someone calls and says they want to set up a meeting to discuss the issue that happened yesterday, and you have to reply: "You'll need to be more specific. Which one?"

My work bestie is feeling overwhelmed studying for our specialty board exam (she's brilliant and amazing, btw). I'm pretty stoked that I got to make this Greek mythology reference while trying to reassure her.

How do we prepare veterinary students to talk about The Big Issues as professionals, like climate change, sustainability, animal welfare, and the role of veterinarians in these conversations? How do you prepare students to discuss with people who have very different opinions or background than their own?

Talks by Isabella Spaans and Anne-Roos Verbree (both from UMC Utrecht) on role models for students in human MedEd gave me much to think about; we very much need diverse role models in veterinary MedEd, but this needs careful attention. Being the only lighthouse in the midst of other kinds of buildings can be a lonely place to be.
I've no answers, but more thoughts here: https://rebeccanordquist.edublogs.org/2024/05/20/role-models-edi-and-lighthouses/

How do climate change, public health, and animal welfare interact in food system shifts?
More than pleased to have worked with talented colleagues on just-published paper discussing how various shifts can affect One Health and (from my standpoint) specifically animal welfare.
