  1. Great work by my colleagues at the WCVM.
Will have real impact on cattle production.

“When we used the drug Cetrorelix, a popular drug used in IVF treatments in humans, we saw that it worked beautifully to synchronize ovulation in animals, and we thought maybe this was the estrogen-free alternative we were looking for all along” #VetMed #Agriculture #ReproSci #Canada #Science

  2. We recently adopted a cat. He is a black cat, but his fur is ticked. It is black at the tips of the hairs but white at the bottoms.

It also is crimped / wavy; so are his whiskers. Is this similar to American Wirehair hair and whiskers? I looked for close-up images, but was unable to find any.

  3. The problem with vet bills – a dog-owning economist explains.

Similar pressures and financial conflicts of interests in some cases in Canada too. The move to large corporations owning too much (vertical integration) should be discouraged.

  6. Just because you might be in need of an extra cup of #coffee today to keep up with daylight saving doesn't mean your #dogs and #cats do, too! ☕ Caffeine is toxic to them. If you suspect your #pet has ingested caffeine in some form, such as coffee grounds, an energy drink or supplement, contact your #vet ASAP or local ER. We provide 24/7 emergency care in #Waltham and #Boston. Learn more at mspca.org/emergency

  8. Not only is it best to maintain the habit of giving the medication each month, but most heartworm preventatives protect your pet from a variety of parasites, no matter the season. Some also stand up to fleas/mites. To learn more about heartworm prevention, check out mspca.org/heartworm

  9. Blood donations save lives - and #animals are no exception! 🩸 Not only is there a shortage of blood available across commercially-owned blood banks, but having a #community blood bank available at the MSPCA-Angell allows owners to advocate for their #pets in the donation process. If you're interested in learning more about how your #pet can help save lives in our community, visit mspca.org/bloodbank

  10. For really pesky ulcerative dermatitis and self-trauma cases I like to break out the mortar and pestle and compound my own secret formula treatment (not actually secret, I'll happily tell you what's in it). I affectionately call it Dr. D's forbidden frosting.🧁

  11. I learned recently that minipigs smell like maple syrup. They are my new favorite obscure weird smell now. I've only worked with farm breeds previously, and I can see now why people would have minipigs as pets. They also love fruit and brushies. ❤️

  16. I will never not be amazed at how well honey bandages work in the gnarliest of infected wounds. Fun fact: the earliest documented medical use of honey for wound treatment was found in an Egyptian papyrus dated to 2600–2200 BC.

  18. Reading, reading, reading. Systematic reviews are fun and rewarding, but it's hard and it takes so much time (when done well). Thankfully we have absolutely amazing people working on this study! #cats #vetmed #science

  19. My work bestie is feeling overwhelmed studying for our specialty board exam (she's brilliant and amazing, btw). I'm pretty stoked that I got to make this Greek mythology reference while trying to reassure her.

  20. How do we prepare veterinary students to talk about The Big Issues as professionals, like climate change, sustainability, animal welfare, and the role of veterinarians in these conversations? How do you prepare students to discuss with people who have very different opinions or background than their own?

  21. Talks by Isabella Spaans and Anne-Roos Verbree (both from UMC Utrecht) on role models for students in human MedEd gave me much to think about; we very much need diverse role models in veterinary MedEd, but this needs careful attention. Being the only lighthouse in the midst of other kinds of buildings can be a lonely place to be.

I've no answers, but more thoughts here: rebeccanordquist.edublogs.org/

  22. How do climate change, public health, and animal welfare interact in food system shifts?

More than pleased to have worked with talented colleagues on just-published paper discussing how various shifts can affect One Health and (from my standpoint) specifically animal welfare.

    No-nonsense, mask-wearing vet wanted in #Ireland

I don't expect #DavosStandard, but simple precautions like ventilation between customers' visits, plus 😷 would be appreciated.

  29. @batcat +1 to talking about mental health in vet med! Thank you for raising that. It's gotten so much harder for veterinarians since I left practice ages ago.

If there are DVMs on Mastodon (or anywhere you can find me) struggling and thinking about switching to a non-traditional veterinary career, message me! I will always make time for my tribe.
