WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to launch an automated fraud-detection tool to scan more than a million disability benefits questionnaires for evidence of fabrication or other problems that could force a new medical exam and impact compensation, according to a VA official.

"Hundreds gathered in front of the gates of Durham’s Veterans Affairs Medical Center Wednesday night for a candlelit vigil honoring Alex Pretti, the 37-year-old VA nurse who was shot and killed by federal agents in Minneapolis on Saturday.
Clutching tealights and bouquets of flowers, attendees formed a line down the sidewalk that stretched so far from the main gate, different sections of the crowd took on different purposes—those near the front listened to speeches while those further back, out of earshot, sang songs of solidarity."

>As a night-shift charge nurse, on any given evening she and a team of five other nurses have to attend to 80 to 90 mostly homeless veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse, communicate with law enforcement, and deescalate conflicts.
That's, at *best*, a 1:13 patient ratio. And that's if the "charge" nurse isn't actually "charging" and is really just another nurse doing rounds. Even for a psych floor, that's a crazy ratio compared to California's 1:6 in-patient psych ratio (freestanding psych units, so far as I know, aren't required to have 1:6 yet; but the article implies this facility the quoted nurse is in is an in-patient facility).
