  1. A recent upgrade to a commercial cell phone tower near the U.S. National Science Foundation #VeryLargeArray (NSF VLA) briefly disrupted some observations, but operations are back to normal following a cooperative effort between the NSF National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NSF NRAO) and the wireless provider: public.nrao.edu/news/quiet-sky/

  3. A study based on @thenrao VLA archival data finds that Operational Data Sharing with #SpaceX has reduced L-band system temperature, and support for "earlier coordinated studies and demonstrate[s] that while StarLink’s DtC transmissions can produce measurable effects, mitigation frameworks like ODS provide effective protection to scientific data quality."

  7. The #VeryLargeArray is, in case you were not aware, very large indeed! Temperature is a toasty 96°F and going higher today. This is where they filmed parts of #Contact and #2010 films.

Did you know #SpaceX had to cut a deal with the #VLA’s Nat’l Radio Astronomy Observatory org to turn off all bandwidth from space as the satellites pass overhead and they pass over CONSTANTLY and they are NUMEROUS and ALL OVER THE SKY and visible at night w/naked eye.

  9. What a day! Very tired!

Today was spent more sightseeing in and around
    #ABQ.

Starting off with a trip to
#OldTown and the #Albuquerque #Museum which we were there for like 2.5 hours. What an amazing collection!

Then we spent another 2 hours or so and strolled around
    #OldTown.

Next we went to get a bite to eat and some adult beverages and we capped off the day visiting
#SandiaPeak and the #Tramway up to the top of the #Sandia #Mountains!

Some beautiful views and great company.

    Tomorrow is another long day.

Tomorrow morning we're heading south to
#Socorro and west to #Magdalena to see the #VLA (#VeryLargeArray).

    Yesterday was spent in
#Taos and #SantaFe and tomorrow is going to be spent in

  10. A decade ago this week, I learned that they open the Trinity test site to the public twice a year and I was underemployed so convinced @mct to go on a roadtrip why not. The Trinity site was interesting but the real treat was stopping at the VLA the day before. I was just starting to dabble in signal processing and one of the tour guides was working on their FPGAs—I learned a lot. Also the weather was incredible. #verylargearray #newmexico flickr.com/search/?user_id=803

  12. Very Large Array (VLA)

The VLA is a system consisting of 27 radio telescopes, each with a diameter of 25 meters. It is installed on a Y-shaped rail system, each 21 km long, on which it can be positioned in various configurations.

The photo shows a prairie landscape with eight telescopes in a row up to the horizon. A snowstorm is approaching and darkening the sky.

  16. "I have a VLA."

"What? A Very Large Array? I find this highly doubtful. Where? I want to see this VLA of yours."

"I don't know what you're talking about. You see it all the time."

"What? Well, what are you talking about?"

    "My Very Large Ass."

  17. A Sneak Peek at the Next Generation Very Large Array's New Antennae

The NRAO is planning a dramatic new upgrade to the Very Large Array, creating a network of telescopes that spans a large part of North America. As part of this upgrade, they got a sneak peek at the prototype radio antenna built in Germany. The 18-meter dish has 76 individual panels arranged in an 8-sided shape. The final array will eventually consist of 244 dishes in the US, Mexico, and Canada.

  19. @NoctisEqui I have been to the #GreenBankObservatory but need to get the the #VeryLargeArray at some point. Its also just cool to be around people that are passionate about what they do and can talk about it for hours.
