El pueblo de los galos: Orígenes, historia y costumbres de los guerreros de la antigua Europa
Un recorrido sencillo por la vida de las tribus celtas que habitaron el territorio de la actual Francia
Cuando escuchamos hablar de los galos, lo primero que nos viene a la mente son las historias de las caricaturas tipo Asterix con guerreros usando cascos con alas y tomando pociones mágicas para derrotar a los soldados romanos. La realidad histórica de este pueblo es mucho más interesante, compleja y rica que los mitos de la televisión. Los galos no eran una sola nación unida bajo un mismo gobierno o un solo rey, sino un conjunto de aproximadamente 80 tribus independientes de origen celta que compartían el mismo idioma, las mismas creencias religiosas y costumbres muy similares. Estos grupos humanos se asentaron y dominaron una enorme región de la Europa occidental que los escritores de Roma bautizaron con el nombre de Galia, un territorio que hoy en día abarca casi la totalidad de Francia, además de partes de Bélgica, Suiza y el norte de Italia.
Los orígenes de los galos se remontan a la Edad del Bronce y a la cultura de Hallstatt en el siglo VIII antes de nuestra era, un periodo donde estos grupos destacaron por su increíble habilidad para trabajar los metales. Con el paso de los años y la llegada de la cultura de La Tène en el siglo V antes de nuestra era, los galos perfeccionaron la metalurgia a un nivel asombroso. Contrario a la idea de que eran salvajes que vivían en chozas dentro de bosques oscuros, los arqueólogos han demostrado que los galos construyeron grandes ciudades fortificadas llamadas oppida. Estas urbes eran centros de comercio con calles organizadas, talleres de herrería, mercados activos y murallas de troncos y piedras compactadas. Su red de caminos comerciales conectaba el norte de Europa con las colonias griegas y romanas, vendiendo vino, cerámica, trigo y herramientas.
La organización social de los galos estaba dividida en tres grandes grupos o clases. En la cima se encontraban los aristócratas y guerreros, quienes elegían a los jefes de las tribus y se encargaban de la defensa militar del territorio. Abajo estaba el pueblo común, formado por campesinos, artesanos, comerciantes y pastores, quienes sostenían la economía con su trabajo en los campos y talleres. El tercer grupo era el de los druidas, los intelectuales de la sociedad gala. Ellos hacían las funciones de jueces para resolver pleitos de tierras o crímenes, actuaban como médicos usando plantas, aconsejaban a los jefes antes de las batallas y servían como maestros que memorizaban las leyes, la historia y los mitos del pueblo, ya que los galos tenían prohibido poner sus conocimientos sagrados por escrito.
En el plano espiritual, las creencias de los galos estaban ligadas a las fuerzas del entorno natural. Adoraban a dioses que controlaban aspectos del mundo real, como Cernunnos, el dios de los animales y los bosques con cuernos de ciervo; Teutates, el protector de la tribu; o Epona, la diosa de la fertilidad de la tierra. Los galos realizaban sus ceremonias sagradas en santuarios al aire libre, claros de bosques y manantiales, donde entregaban ofrendas de espadas rotas y monedas de oro a los fondos de los lagos y ríos para agradecer a los dioses. Festejaban grandes celebraciones relacionadas con la agricultura, como la fiesta de Samhain que marcaba el inicio del invierno y el año nuevo celta, o la fiesta de Beltaine que celebraba la llegada del calor y el crecimiento de las plantas.
La historia de los galos cambió en el siglo I antes de nuestra era, de forma exacta entre los años 58 y 50 a.C., cuando el general romano Julio César inició la Guerra de las Galias para conquistar todo el territorio. A pesar de que los galos eran guerreros temibles que usaban largas espadas de hierro y veloces carros de guerra, su gran debilidad fue la falta de unión entre las tribus. En el año 52 antes de nuestra era, un joven jefe llamado Vercingétorix logró unir a casi todos los pueblos galos para enfrentar la invasión romana, derrotando a Julio César en la batalla de Gergovia. Sin embargo, las legiones romanas rodearon al ejército de Vercingétorix en la ciudad fortificada de Alesia. Tras semanas de hambre, el líder galo se rindió para salvar a su pueblo, marcando el fin de la independencia de la Galia y el inicio de una época donde las tradiciones celtas se mezclaron con las de Roma.

De opgraving van Alesia
De melding van de eerste vondsten uit Alesia (klik=groot)De opgraving van Alesia is terecht beroemd, en om de juiste reden: de plek staat symbool voor de Romeinse onderwerping van Gallië. In zijn Aantekeningen bij de Gallische Oorlog presenteert Julius Caesar de belegering en de gevechten als beslissend, en hoewel daar kanttekeningen bij zijn te plaatsen, is begrijpelijk dat voor de Fransen Alesia een echte lieu de mémoire is geworden. Maar er is nog een andere reden waarom Alesia zo’n belangrijke site is: hier is de militaire experimentele archeologie ontstaan, de hedendaagse nabootsing van antieke technieken om de opgegraven militaire objecten beter te begrijpen.
De ontdekking van Alesia
De opgravingen begonnen in 1860 toen bij drainagewerkzaamheden een Keltisch wapendepot werd aangetroffen. Zie de afbeelding hierboven. Het depot dateerde uit de vroege Hallstatt-periode, acht eeuwen te vroeg, maar het was duidelijk dat Alise-Sainte-Reine, zoals de plaats heet, waarschijnlijk de plek was waar Caesar legionairs de Gallische soldaten van Vercingetorix hadden verslagen.
Al snel maakte keizer Napoleon III de gelden vrij voor grootschalig onderzoek. Zijn belangstelling voor de Oudheid was al ouder. Sinds zijn staatsgreep was hij al bezig met een Histoire de Jules César, waarin hij, naar de inzichten van die tijd, probeerde te doorgronden hoe zo’n “grote man” te werk was gegaan en hoe hij de wereld naar zijn hand had kunnen zetten. Wie grote mannen als Caesar, Karel de Grote en Napoleon I begreep, mocht hopen in enkele jaren tijd iets dergelijks te doen. Toen de melding uit Alesia kwam, had hij al een team van historici verzameld en was er al een Commission de la Topographie des Gaules. Weliswaar noemde de melding vondsten, die wij inmiddels te oud vinden, maar de keizer was verrukt en maakte dus fondsen vrij.
In 1861 begon het onderzoek, dat stond onder leiding van Eugène Stoffel (1821-1907). In vijf jaar tijd werd met allerlei opgravingen het tracé van de dubbele rij palissades in kaart gebracht. Ook de door Caesar in zijn Gallische Oorlog genoemde forten, grachten en greppels, de “grafzerken” en de “lelies” werden gevonden. De laatsten waren vergelijkbaar met onze kraaienpoten: metalen stekels die het moeilijk maakten voor een aanvaller om vooruit te komen, omdat hij die scherpe punten moest ontwijken. Het heeft me altijd verbaasd – en verbaast me nog altijd – dat die er na ruim negentien eeuwen nog steeds lagen. De boeren van Romeins Alesia moeten er last van gehad hebben, maar moeten ook een waardevolle bron van metaal hebben gekend. In elk geval: de topografie van Caesars verslag bleek tot in de puntjes te kloppen.
Maar ook: het werd duidelijk dat de Galliërs geen halfnaakte barbaren waren à la Stervende Galliër, maar goed bewapende en bepantserde soldaten. Een gevonden helm kon evengoed door een Romein als een Galliër zijn gedragen.
Katapultkogels uit Alesia (Musée d’Archéologie nationale, Saint-Germain-en-Laye)Experimentele archeologie
Nu het slagveld zo precies bekend was, en nu katapultpijlen en kogels gevonden waren, beschikten oudheidkundigen over data waarop ze hun reconstructies konden baseren. Dat was al eerder geprobeerd: al sinds de Renaissance bouwde men de belegeringsmachines na die in de antieke bronnen staan beschreven. Eén probleem was dat men de onderdelen niet kende; een ander was dat men niet wist wat ze in de praktijk vermochten. Nu oudheidkundigen onderdelen bezaten en wisten op welke afstand van de Gallische stad Alesia het Romeinse geschut stond opgesteld, was meer informatie bekend dan ooit.
De opdracht om de belegeringsinstrumenten te reconstrueren, ging naar Jean-Baptiste Verchère de Reffye, die al eerder furore had gemaakt door een machinegeweer uit te vinden. Evident iemand met verstand van geschut. In Alesia maakte hij dus verschillende reconstructies van de antieke balista, om te kijken welk model in staat was doelen te treffen op de in Alesia geconstateerde afstanden. De experimenten werden gedaan in de tuinen van het kasteel te Saint-Germain-en-Laye, waar nu de Franse nationale archeologische collectie wordt geëxposeerd, inclusief de vondsten uit Alesia.
Helm uit Alesia (Musée d’Archéologie nationale, Saint-Germain-en-Laye)Ik heb die negentiende-eeuwse reconstructies daar gezien. Ze stonden ietwat achteraf. Ze kloppen namelijk niet. In de twintigste eeuw is bijvoorbeeld ontdekt dat de torsie niet kwam van opgewikkelde touwen, maar van runderspieren. Ook zijn er inmiddels veel meer onderdelen opgegraven. We hebben nu dus nog meer data, maar de reconstructies van Alesia waren de eerste die waren gebaseerd op teksten én archeologische gegevens. Dat was een goed idee – en het helpt natuurlijk als er een keizer achter je staat die nieuwe ideeën wil financieren.

Donc, basiquement, quelqu'un a vu Braveheart et s'est dit "je vais refaire exactement la même chose, mais en Gaule, avec Christophe Lambert, par une 3ème ou 4ème équipe, et rempli de citations de biscuits de fortune chinois.C'était : mauvais. Puissamment mauvais. Les défauts sont innombrables.
En même temps les raisons sont multiples, mais la plus connue : le metteur en scène était saoul en permanence. -
