  1. Is the 1977 two-part episode of "The Six Million Dollar Man" called "Death Probe" based on the failed Soviet Venera mission in 1972? Then, in an example of life imitating art (or physics being physics) that failed probe also returned to Earth in May 2025, largely intact due to its engineering to survive descent to the surface of Venus.

    Many other details differ.

  3. "Not many years ago, Venus was sometimes called 'the earth's twin.' This was principally because they are nearly the same size..."

But the planet is a mystery.

"... it is continually covered by clouds which optical telescopes cannot penetrate."

In 1970, a Russian probe, Venera 7... dropped instruments by parachute to the surface... They say it is extremely hot, nearly 900 degrees F.

  4. Venus is a total powerhouse. The Venera 13 and 14 landers captured the only sights we have from the surface of our scorching neighbour — 460°C heat, crushing pressure, and a sky of sulfuric acid clouds. Soviet-era engineering, otherworldly results. 🟠🔥

  8. What The Soviets Found On Venus

    • interesting vid to watch
    • learn about Soviet determination
    • unreal atmospheric pressures
    • temperatures higher than an oven in the atmosphere
    • braking systems for probes in water like behaving heavy Venus atmosphere
    • Venera 13 had a mic onboard!
    • Venus sounds horrifying (at least to my little cousin whose listening in as I make this toot) ;)
    • they had sent 14 probes at least to Venus

  10. 50 years (and one day) ago the first images from the surface of another planet reached Earth - not from Mars but from Venus, by the Soviet Union's #Venera 9 lander: facebook.com/Mercury.3488/post (the image here from planetary.org/space-images/ven shows a cleaned-up panorama the lander took).

  12. #Venera 14 was a #Soviet space probe that successfully landed on the surface of Venus on March 5, 1982. It was part of the Venera program, which sent a series of probes to explore the planet.

Designed to operate in Venus's hostile environment, the lander survived for 57 minutes—25 minutes longer than its mission plan.

  19. "The special, smooth aerodynamical shape of the spacecraft allows it to function as a measure of the density in very low Earth orbit. Every time the elliptical orbit passes through the perigee, it loses apogee height. The atmospheric drag on the object can be inferred from the altitude difference right until reentry. The design of most spacecraft is too complicated to make accurate measurements, but the Venera descent craft’s nearly spherical shape does allow it. This turns its reentry into an ‘accidental’ reentry science experiment."

Felix Schöfbänker interprets this imagery from a month ago as showing no sign of a parachute deployed.

I'm more interested in whether the antennae deploy anyway, but I guess there will be no power left by now..

  26. So, on May 10 (at 7:34 UTC +-14h) a half-ton, 53 year old failed Russian Venus mission satellite will fall back onto Earth. Lots of titanium, some will likely crash onto the ground.

Impact could happen between 52°N and 52°S.

On an unrelated note, on May 10, the catholic Conclave would be in their voting round number 10.

    Vatical City is at 42°N.

    Just saying.

  30. Now, 53 years later, the Venus lander from the #KOSMOS482 #Venera mission is about to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere and, due to it's rugged and dense construction, is expected to make it largely intact to the surface.

Current orbital predictions make it largely impossible that the probe will land in New Zealand, but there are many other tempting targets between 51 degrees of latitude North and South.
