The demise of Kindle Vella, while not surprising, is still a little sad. I was an early participant in the platform and always thought there was some real potential in the premise. 🤔

Monday, August 5th, I will begin serialization of a brand new story titled "A Code of Silence", exclusively on #kindlevella (in time for this year's #vellys)! Over the first 2 weeks, 10 free episodes will be published, one per day, Monday through Friday. Then new episodes will arrive on Thursdays until the story reaches completion (full schedule TBA).

Did a little looking and analyzing [of Kindle Vella publishing]. I hope this doesn't bore you. I'm also hash-tagging it.Two things are telling:

Well that verifies what you said about low readership. And
"we will compensate episodes unlocked using free Tokens at the 200 Token bundle rate, through March 2023.
The page looks like it isn't being maintained.
Are you publishing episodes? It seems only to be profitable if you have more than one episode, since the first episode is always free. Seems like 1,000 to 2,000 word stories are a no-go here. Novelettes at very least.
The dashboard seems to only be workable if you have multiple episodes. It takes two episodes to detect if the reader had interest. It takes more to ensure paid tokens are used at some point.
Since Vella spots you 200 free tokens, new readers can do sampling for free... but it also means if nothing catches them from the service in that time, they may just give up on Vella altogether. With all the favs, featured, and hot categories, our new author stuff might get missed.
It's probably like all publishing in the end. You have to keep trying until you hit (and then work furiously). If you gain readership, the biggest issue might be why?

Likely not, but it's good to be honest and look at those that didn't get noticed and remove them. I just serialized a novelette I wrote in 2018. Oh, my! I really had to rewrite the first 5-10 paragraphs and polish with all I've learned in the last seven years. Nothing as heartbreaking as suddenly selling, and readers realizing the rest is crap. I'm not good at pruning, but I do think about it...
I am really not sure if that ... I have a very narrow market.
Hard to tell. This is both good and bad. Bad if the readers aren't finding you. Good if they suddenly find you and word spreads. This part is something I've found in other distribution methods. If something hits, readership of others like it go up.
I appreciate you posting your poll. I'm going to file this away as a possible outlet.

The other option is Kindle Vella. The pricing on that is per 'episode' which for me is around 2000 words. It's like a short chapter. The pricing gets weird here, because it's based on how many tokens the reader used to buy the episode and how much they paid for their tokens (-50% for Amazon's cut). It's a calculation that ends up being about 13-14 cents per episode.

Bing Bang Boom! A little over two hours and 2486 words are on the page. Sometimes the words come quickly. I can't guarantee they are good words or that I won't delete them all later, but Words Have Been Written, and I'll take them.
This brings us to the end of episode 30 of The Resort, and it features one of my favorite characters just having a rough time of it. More to come!
