Pocos saben quién fue realmente.En Las meninas, Velázquez colocó en el centro de la escena a una niña rubia de mirada tranquila.
No fue una elección estética ni inocente.
Fue un acto político.
Margarita Teresa de Austria, nacida en 1651, no era solo una infanta: era la última gran esperanza de una dinastía que empezaba a desmoronarse desde dentro.Hija de Felipe IV y de Mariana de Austria —su propia sobrina—, Margarita llegó al mundo marcada por la endogamia extrema de los Habsburgo.
Era hermana de Carlos II, el futuro “Hechizado”, y ambos representaban las dos caras de una misma herencia genética: ella, aparentemente sana; él, frágil, enfermizo, incapaz de asegurar descendencia.
Mientras Carlos encarnaba el problema, Margarita fue concebida como la solución.Desde muy pequeña, su vida tuvo un único objetivo.
Fue prometida casi desde la cuna a su tío Leopoldo I, emperador del Sacro Imperio.
El matrimonio no respondía al afecto ni a la cercanía familiar —algo irrelevante en esa casa—, sino a una necesidad urgente: garantizar la continuidad del linaje Habsburgo y mantener abierta la posibilidad de que España siguiera en manos de la familia si Carlos moría sin herederos.Velázquez entendió perfectamente ese papel.
Por eso la pintó una y otra vez.
Los retratos de Margarita no eran simples cuadros: eran auténticos “informes de estado”.
Viajaban a Viena para demostrar que la futura emperatriz crecía sana, fuerte y fértil.
Rosa, azul, plata.
Cada vestido, cada pose, cada gesto medido.
En Madrid simbolizaba el último hilo del imperio español; en Viena, una promesa de futuro.Se casó con quince años.
A los pocos años ya era emperatriz.
Su vida en Viena estuvo marcada por embarazos continuos, partos difíciles y una presión dinástica constante.
Los retratos de su etapa adulta, conservados hoy en el Kunsthistorisches Museum, muestran a una mujer agotada, envejecida antes de tiempo.
Murió con solo veintiún años, consumida por el mismo deber que había dado sentido a su existencia.Nunca gobernó.
Nunca tomó decisiones políticas visibles.
No empuñó armas ni firmó tratados.
Pero sostuvo imperios con su cuerpo, su matrimonio y su descendencia.
Fue, literalmente, una pieza de ajedrez biológica.Irónicamente, murió antes que su hermano Carlos II. Cuando él falleció en 1700 sin hijos, Europa entró en guerra.
Los descendientes de Margarita en Austria y los de su hermanastra María Teresa en Francia se disputaron el trono español, desencadenando la Guerra de Sucesión.
El equilibrio que ella debía garantizar se rompió para siempre.Quedó el cuadro.
Quedó la mirada.
Quedó la niña eterna de Velázquez.Porque a veces la Historia no se escribe con sangre.
