  2. 📢 Calling all mosquito biologists! 🦟🔬

A sister program to our Pathogen Data Network, the Genomic Center for Infectious Diseases (GCID) Program is launching the Global Culicidae Reference Genomes Project and is looking for researchers worldwide to contribute mosquito specimens that currently lack reference genomes.

  3. Hey #SouthSanJose! If you live in these zip codes, 94301, 94304, 94305, and 94306, please read this notification that I got from #SantaClaraCounty #VectorControl.

#WestNileVirus causes symptoms similar to flu. There is no cure for it nor is there a vaccine. It doesn't kill many people (400 is "not many"), but if you are immuno-compromised in any way, you would want to avoid it.

"Mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus have been detected near your neighborhood. To reduce the threat to you and your family, the County of Santa Clara Vector Control District will be reducing the mosquito population within the 94301, 94304, 94305, and 94306 ZIP Codes. The localized treatment will use truck-mounted equipment and is scheduled to begin Thursday, July 27 around 10 p.m., and last approximately four hours.

There is no need to relocate during the treatment, but those who wish to minimize exposure for family members or pets may choose to close windows and remain inside during the scheduled time period."

  4. CW: Introduction

Redoing my #Introduction post as I've just moved over from Fediscience to this instance. 👋

Hi, I'm Callum. I am currently manager of a large insectary facility in the UK. I'm interested in #Mosquitoes #VectorControl #Genomics #Speciation and #Evolution.

  5. Question for any #entomology or #VectorControl experts out there. I’m wondering if doing a #tick drag with a permethrin treated sheet of fabric in a fenced yard might work to lower the number of ticks? Especially if done on a weekly basis through tick season? Would ticks climb onto the fabric and stay on long enough for the permethrin to kill them? Or would they drop off too quickly for it to affect them? Thoughts?

  6. Nous avons présenté 2 posters à l'#EMCA (28 & 29/11/2022) à Mendrisio 🇨🇭 sur les indicateurs entomologiques 🦟 utilisés en situation d'urgence opérationnelle 🚨 :
    - "Time is running ⏱️ : How to assess #Aedesalbopictus abundance and operational efficiency of #vectorcontrol in an outbreak context in Europe 🇪🇺 ? Case studies of outbreaks in France 🇫🇷 from 2020 to 2022".
    - "Time is running ⏱️ : Reliability of the abacus method 🔎
for estimating larval abundance of #Stegomyia mosquitoes".

  7. Does anyone have any good recommendations for (preferably lethal) traps for both male and female #Aedes #aegypti mosquitoes? Our insectary currently only has UV-light bug zappers installed which don't really do much for mozzies. #VectorControl #Mosquito
