  1. Deadly #varroa #mite threatens half of Canberra’s #beehives.

The varroa mite, is expected to wipe out half of the #ACT's 6,000 #bee hives within two years, putting local #fruit & #vegetable #crops at #risk.

Varroa mites are 1 to 2 millimetre-long parasites that attach to honey bees, eventually killing the bees and their colonies.

The ACT's first infestation was found in a hive in Kowen in April this year. #auspol #apiarist #BeeKeepers

  11. #Varroa mite detected in #SouthAustralia for first time!

The discovery was made in a #beehive at #Pooginook in the state's Riverland during routine surveillance by PIRSA inspectors.

The infested hive is believed to have originated in a consignment of hives from Queensland. #auspol #bees #apiarist

    Interesting:

"Varroa mites originally evolved to parasitize Apis cerana, the honey bee species native to Asia, and only affected drones of that species. When Varroa mites infect worker brood in Asian bees, the larva dies and the Varroa mite can’t reproduce."

"As they adapted to the honey bees (Apis mellifera) common in Europe and North America, however, Varroa mites became able to parasitize drone, queen, or worker bees. However, there is a still a large preference for drone brood. Varroa mites are often 5–10 times more abundant in drone brood cells than worker or queen cells. Since drones take longer to mature into adults and the drone brood are bigger, the Varroa mites can produce more offspring in these cells. By removing excess drone brood, a beekeeper can eliminate a large portion of their Varroa mite population."

There was an bee hive invented by some clever Aussies which used electronics at the hive entrance to detect varroa as each bee returned to the hive. Infected bees where detected, sorted, bared from entry and isolated (maybe euthanised I can’t remember). Whatever happened? Costs? It might be cheaper to ‘spray’ but history tells us sprays have unintended consequences down the line… if memory serves, I might have seen something about these tech hives on the ABC.

  16. I am ecstatic to learn that one of our beehives is still varroa-free, here in #brisbane, #australia. It's only a matter of time before they get here though. 🙁

I also harvested about 20kg of honey. The bees were very calm, though it was 30°C and 80% humidity. Sweat city. I'll check our other hive next week.

  18. Making a thing.

When you need a strainer of a particular size, find something created in OpenSCAD and change the dimensions. v2 was sized and spaced ok but it was too thin. v3 fixed the thinness and added some rings for support around the diameter. The rings were added in the slicer.

A bee strainer for checking for varroa mites that fits in a peanut butter jar.

  19. Saw a #bumblebee in rural North Wales today, covered in mites (possibly #varroa?) behind the wings. Not sure whether this is life in balance or not, nor where this situation was in terms of cause and effect. This was 1100ft ASL and there was little obvious food around for it.

  20. We have all heard about the devastation caused by Varroa mites. Thankfully, there is now something you can do to help our honey bees.

Australian National University's Research School of Biology has started gathering data on bee populations, and they'll supply materials if you can spare a sunny afternoon to collect some bees.

  23. Research on a new treatment for a deadly #honeybee parasite is getting a boost thanks to an exclusive collaboration agreement between Simon Fraser University and Véto-pharma. The treatment, developed by #SFUChemistry professor Erika Plettner paralyzes #varroa mites, causing them to fall off of bees.
