  1. Thanks @cjtype for pointing out that today May 10th marks 10 years of #VariableFonts!
A lost opportunity that we could have tapped into last week during the Modular Variable Font Workshop.

    Anyhow!

  15. Out of the Black and White: Unveiling the LGM 2026 Visual Identity

The black-and-white placeholder is gone. The new visual identity for LGM 2026 is live. We re:wired classical halftone printing into a real-time digital effect. The new design is built on custom WebGL2 shaders, algorithmic variable fonts, and animated screen angles.

Movement Matters: Variable Fonts’ New Tonal Expressions

Tiny fact check: “While a built-in slider to move between masters might seem like a basic requirement for contemporary font editors, it only appears to be available in Fontra.”

    @fontlab has native slider(s) since version 6.
In version 5, one could even find one in the Metrics Window, that was the #MultipleMaster technique though, and not #VariableFonts.

  17. Neue DIN breaks new ground again with Italic & Retalic.

Despite the large size of Neue DIN, italics were missing. Not only because we wanted to design them with care, we also wanted to break new ground when it comes to something natural as italics. So we added not ‘only’ the 81 normal oblique fonts, but also the same number of backslanted variants. These Retalics offer novel possibilities in display contexts, for example.

This update increases the number of static fonts to a whopping 243. For those who prefer a more manageable approach, the variable font has been given a third axis for slanting in both directions. This one is especially fun. Try it out for yourself: fontwerk.com/fonts/neue-din

  19. I just noticed Playfair Display uses x-height numerals. For display fonts, it creates a very elegant, subtle statement—perfect for subtle, text aligned page numbers or pricing.

Other serif designs use different techniques to avoid the "Ally/a11y" misreading, but given the context and cultural usage, it’s rarely a functional issue. I’m wondering, if, and how, to use this for variations in Gooby. 🎨✨

    Literally the nicest guy! 🫶
We found some similarities in our explorations with #VariableFonts.

  24. How about some good news for a change?

#Affinity has fixed (this time for real) the #kerning in #VariableFonts.
I tested the lastes beta (2.6.0.3058) and all tested fonts work as supposed.

  25. Regarding the browser as context, when do variable fonts are worthy?

In my point of view only when there are some typography animation, or when you really use the full "family" (which is rare) or else it is just extra Kb over the wire and one is better off cherry picking weights and styles.

It is a bit annoying that some fonts are now variable fonts only which were not before, although I understand that maintaining both might be an hassle.

  26. I wrote a command line tool to stretch #SRT subtitles between two time codes measured in a movie file, e.g. the first and last line of dialogue in the movie.

So when you have a SRT file that is at a slightly different „speed“ or your movie has some extra titles at the beginning, the tool can adapt your SRT file to that.

My knowledge of #font #interpolation and #variablefonts axis mapping made this really simple ;)

  27. Update to my post about using #VariableFonts in theme.json: As of #Gutenberg 16.3.0, they show up correctly in the editor! Previously they were just a bit messed up, annoying but I dealt with it since it worked fine on the front end.

  28. ICYMI: My exploration of variable fonts in a custom #WordPress block theme:

"In order to make use of a variable font like Recursive, which has more than just a weight and slant axis, my solution is to use the same variable font file while defining separately-named font faces. This gives us font options in the editor to use a **cursive** style and **monospace** style, which are custom axes that Recursive provides."

  30. Can someone please update me on CFF2? Is it… usable/stable? Can it be used realistically outside of Adobe apps? Any reason not to offer it to customers (alongside typical VF-TTFs of course)? Is it better to use AFDKO or FontMake for CFF2 fonts? Anything else I should know?

For some reason I’ve been sleeping on CFF2 fonts, would appreciate a schooling!

  32. Can anyone who’s familiar with Designspace 5.0 tell me how I can get an upright master and an italic (oblique) master to generate a single variable font? It seems using <axis-subset /> it’s an either/or situation.
