Thus Shaviv deburring kit is sooooo much nicer than the little handles that come with the builders kits for planes. I wish I had bought it up front! #rv8 #vansaircraft

The main issue with just using velcro straps is going to be vibration prevention. I really don’t want this to vibrate against the center console panel. #VansAircraft #Aviation #avgeek #ExperimentalAviation #AirplaneOwnership

#VansAircraft came out with a fleet-wide service bulletin to install egress hammers. Kind of a no-brainer, but I’ll admit to never having thought of this (fire extinguisher yes, egress hammer, no). https://www.vansaircraft.com/service-information-and-revisions/sb-00079/
This shouldn’t be hard to comply with - Vans sells these for $25 each, and assuming they actually ship relatively quickly (big if, for real. I see these are already on backorder), the annoying part is just figuring out where and how to mount it. Might be able to rivet some velcro straps to the center console and have that be the install method?

I'm excited and a bit nervous to have an EAA tech counselor come over and look over my Van's Aircraft RV-8. #experimentalaircraft #vansaircraft

I got my Crow Safety Gear harnesses for my RV-8. It'll be a little while before I can use them, but since the price was going up 15% shortly I thought it would be good to order them. Now, back to deburring. So many holes to deburr. #rv8 #vansaircraft #experimentalaircraft
-
So many little details to tie up still, but it was soooooo cool to see the aileron move when I pushed or pulled the control rod today in my wings.
-
Now that my fuselage is on a rotisserie it doesn’t make a good place to hold the RV-8 plans. Unlike the more modern RV-10 and RV-14 the 8 used text that refers to large drawings. Now I have a very cheapo art easel to hold them!

It’s nerve wracking starting on new things. Drilling engine mount holes to 1/4” for AN4 bolts for the rotisserie had to be one of the first things I’d do on the fuselage but I’m glad I had the 90” drill bushings for a bit of peace of mind. It’s a lot of metal to drill through here - it supports the whole engine - so it has to be as straight as it possibly can be. I’ll eventually upsize these for the AN6 bolts that hold the engine mount on. #rv8 #experimentalaircraft #vansaircraft #pilot

Here’s a tool not on any buy list for a vans aircraft. I wish it was, because it would have saved me a lot of headache. Get yourself a microstop countersink and cut it in half. Use it to get into tight places.
-
Almost finished my RV-8 tail kit. The right elevator needs a replacement counterweight and the rudder needs RTV to prevent future cracks. On to the wings while I wait on things!
-
It was nice of RV Builders to install the tail spring on my quickbuild fuselage, I didn’t take in account its added length. I’m glad it all fits! It makes for a great handle for moving the fuse, which is why they installed it I’m sure.
Going to talk with the airport and get in line for a hanger, and by then hopefully my wings are close to done and we can have some space back in the garage.

The Sky Designs RV-8 landing gear are some of the coolest things I’ve seen for the Van’s Aircraft. I was disappointed that they’re only available for the RV-8 when I was building a -10 but now that’s not an issue 🎉
These taught me about gun drilling, still a magical process allowing you to drill several feet through and around curves in something. The brake lines run internally on these gear legs.
-
I have to say the Aero Sport Power folks are top notch in every possible way. If you’re in the market for an aircraft engine, talk with them. I’ve also confirmed that my planned AEIO-375 engine build will work using G100UL or MOGAS once leaded avgas is no longer available here in California.
I have to check about the fuel senders though, as I know they can be off when switching fuels.

I wanted to counteract some of the increased weight at the front that building an areobatic plane requires for things like the aerobatic prop, inverted oil, and a smoke system. The Sky Dynamics Featherweight flywheel drops around three pounds compared to the Lycoming default. And it looks pretty cool too!

I made a little safety wire practice kit. Not something I’ve heard much about, but I can already tell a practice kit was worth the minor expense to not have to learn on the plane. Like riveting and so many other things with kitplanes, I can tell safety wire is an art form beyond just the basic instructions.

I took advantage of the 20% off homebuilders week EAA sale to get a set of flight test cards. I’m sort of suprised how many they are, but they’re really good quality card stock and perfectly sized for use in a plane.
-
My RV-8 empennage kit shipped. I’m very suprised that it, with the crate and everything, only weighs 74lbs. That’s a lot less ”stuff” than the RV-10 empennage kit!
-
One tip I learned at the EAA SportAir Workshop is that smooth forceps work great as tiny clamps where a cleco clamp wouldn’t fit.
-
I've got to say, Aero Sport Products really goes out of their way on engine builds. I've had so many questions, changed from an IO-540 to an IO-390 to an AEIO-375, changed ignitions & fuel systems, and had questions along the way. I still haven't paid anything to them, but they're super helpful and put up with all my questions. I'm excited to support a company like this. #experimentalaircraft #vansaircraft #lycoming

It’s fun researching stuff for the RV-8. It’s like min/maxing in a video game - build the best & most reliable plane for the least weight to keep it as far under the aerobatic gross weight limit as possible.
-
I've switched my RV-10 order to one for an RV-8, just about as different as you can get in every way but a better fit for our (my, really) actual use cases. It is cheaper to build, more affordable to fly, and aerobatic!
I also joined the IAC and am looking forward to being able to compete at the sportsman level someday.
I will be selling the RV-10 tail kit I've got.

I bought some SkyBolt fasteners… for an RV-8! Not sure the 10 is the best plane for us after a lot of thinking - still may be, but since SkyBolt is offering 20% off on kits it makes sense to get the smaller kit now. Can always buy more for the bigger RV-10 cowling.
-
These two little brackets were such a pain, but they’re done now.
-
I made some shear clips for the RV-10 rudder today. No idea what they do, but they should work to clip the shear.
-
I'm practicing putting in rivets, and also drilling them back out. Getting better at it. By the time Van's replaces my laser cut parts I'll be an expert! #vansaircraft #rv10 #kitplane

Does anyone have LP Aero windows with vents on their planes? Have opinions on them?
I like that they block almost all UV light, and being able to open a window vent would be nice.. but pretty pricey for those benefits!

I’ve been practicing a row of rivets of various sources each day. I think I’m getting better at this! (Row towards the center is today’s) #vansaircraft #metalworking #rivet
-
Does anyone have any pro tips on using a pneumatic squeezer to set rivets? I’m having a hard time learning, but everyone seems to love using it whenever they can so I think I’m doing it wrong? Where did you learn?
-
Got my RV-10 empennage kit which has been up at Synergy Air in Oregon since February. I didn’t want to travel up there when I wasn’t sure what I could actually work on due to the laser cutting issues. I’m looking forward to sorting through it tonight though!!

Try number two at building a dimpler table was a success. At this rate, I should order a second aircraft kit. It took two goes at eaa workbenches and two dimpler tables..
-
I’m not sure it would be possible to package this in a more wasteful way. Gets good reviews though and should work well to spray some primer and paint once I can work on the RV-10 kit. #homebuilt #vansaircraft #paintgun #rv10

It just occurred to me that I’ll need to get a high performance endorsement to fly my Lycoming IO-540 powered Vans RV-10. It should net out around 260/270 horsepower.
That’ll be fun to do, and lucky the place I rent my Diamond DA40s from has a Cirrus that should qualify for that training.
