Precies volgens planning zijn de tekeningen klaar voor de verbouwing. 🎉🎊🥳
Ook de constructeur heeft vandaag netjes alles aangeleverd. 👏

Dit weekend rustig alles doorlezen. Het document van de constructeur gaat nog een hele kluif worden. Deze is maar liefst 249 pagina’s. 😅

Volgende week vrijdag nog de laatste puntjes op de i zetten met de architect en dan kan alles naar de aannemer om de planning rond te maken. 🤞🏻

Ik ben deze maand een jaar #VanHetGasAf.

Hoe vier je zo'n mijlpaal? Elektrische lampjes in de tuin hangen? Vuurtje in de tuin met een biertje? Een open brief in de lokale krant om de energiecoaches te bedanken voor het gesprek waar alles mee begonnen is?

Of gewoon doorgaan op de goede weg, zonder er speciaal aandacht aan te besteden, want dit is nu eenmaal het nieuwe normaal?

En nu zijn we echt, officieel #VanHetGasAf. De gasleidingen zijn fysiek verwijderd. Chirurgisch werk: via drie gaatjes in de grond is meer dan 20 meter aan koperen pijp weggetrokken. Einde van een tijdperk. ;-) #energie

Zojuist de technische schouw gehad voor onze full electric warmtepomp, alle lichten staan op groen, het gaat nu echt gebeuren! #VanHetGasAf

To summarise: In the worst case, our CO2 emissions are reduced by 95% vs. burning gas, we have no heating bill at all any more, and our home was warmer than before.

We just received our "jaarafrekening". This is the final yearly invoice sent by our energy company. They are about to pay us €252, and we will continue to pay them €5 per month next year, just like last year. i.e. overall our energy company is paying us about €200 for last year's electricity. Everything in our home is powered by electricity. No gas connection. No wood burner.

Nothing that we've done to achieve a negative energy bill was especially expensive. In particular, our installation of a air-air heat pump and a couple of extra solar panels cost far less than several of our neighbours paid for the wood burning stoves they've installed, which stink up the neighbourhood all through winter.

We also don't have to buy wood to burn.

People concerned about the cost of heating with gas buy woodburners at a higher rate than heat pumps largely because they have no idea about the relative costs. If they knew, perhaps we could have clean air.

I'll write a comprehensive blog post at the end of March about energy consumption, costs & emissions due to the heatpump vs. gas this winter. I can tell you already that we using a *lot* less total energy now.

Another DIY project completed. We now have an infrared panel for heating in the bathroom.
There's already a heat pump to provide warmth downstairs for our living areas. IR seems like an ideal way to add a little bit of immediate supplementary heat in the bathroom. A bathroom does not need to be heated all the time, it only needs to feel reasonably warm when you're in there.
Holes drilled, electrics rearranged (slightly dodgy connection made by the previous owner found an eradicated) and it's good to go.

News from our energy supplier. They now want us to pay €5 a month for our energy for the rest of the year, with an expectation that this will mean we'll have overpaid by €290 by the end of the year. That sounds quite agreeable.

To have the gas connection to your home cut off in the Netherlands can cost €869 (€718.28 + 21% tax). But happily this is completely subsidized at the moment so it'll actually cost us nothing at all.

We stopped cooking with gas years ago. It was the hot water for the shower which made us keep our gas connection but now we have electric hot water and it's time for the absurdly over-sized central heating boiler to go as well: Because we've insulated well it only actually worked for the equivalent of five minutes at full power in the whole year.

Vanwege #vanhetgasaf (succes) heb ik nu een e-boiler. Het is een zgn. slimme boiler met #wifi (niet werkend gekregen, want ik ben dom) #zelflerend #smart en met timers. Alleen de douche zit erop. Eens per 2 of 3 dagen douchen. That’s it. Verbruik is hoog, wat ik ook probeer met de instellingen 🧐 Ik heb ‘m daarom nu op een #energysocket aangesloten en zet ‘m alleen 2uur vóór douchen aan. 0,8kWh bespaart. Elke dag. Soms is het slimmer om dom te zijn.

Er zit hier gas in de grond?! Doen we maar een stop in. #vanhetgasaf

Good news ! Calculations based on the energy consumption of the electric water heater we installed three weeks ago indicate that we can expect our combined monthly electricity and gas bill to drop from the current €40 a month to approximately zero, because the extra electricity consumed by the water heater should be cancelled out almost exactly by the extra solar panels we installed in September.

Here's a new blog post for today about the water heater that I installed over the weekend.
Sounds dull, right ? Well this might actually save half of our total energy bill.
Replacing the antiquated gas boiler with an electric boiler running from our solar panels has been on the to-do list for years, but we kept prioritizing other things to save energy. Because the other work kept reducing our total energy consumption, that which remained from the water heater started to look a bit silly as it was costing us nearly half of our total annual energy bill for absolutely everything that we do in our work and private life.
Anyway, the job is done now. While water boilers really are a bit boring, this job brings us one step closer to being completely free of fossil fuel.
What I particularly appreciate is that when I return home from exercising I can now take a completely fossil-fuel free shower. Today the sun heated up my shower water while I cycled.
