👀Last night (Sept 9, 2024), a legal opinion was delivered to Vancouver city councillors with regards to abolishment of the #VancouverParkBoard by current mayor + ABC party majority. ABC party campaigned to keep the park board.

🏞️Independent park board commissioners and Vancouver citizens may have a "strong Canadian Charter case to opposed mid-term abolishment of elected Park Board commissioners".

Thank you @ThomasDigby1

Not happy with Stanley Park Drive?

There are a few options under consideration, all of them include restrictions on private vehicles, and a couple of them are car-free!

Very interesting 🧵 (from 2019) currently trending again on 🐦-site (sorry). Architect, now @alfredtwu, examined how low- to mid-rise buildings (approx. 6 stories, similar to Europe) are *more efficient*.

Why is the current ABC #Vancouver party mayor & city council pushing for more high rises (40+ stories) and to abolish the #VancouverParkBoard?

Who actually benefits? Vancouverites or developers? 🤨

On Mayor Sim's motion to dismantle #VancouverParkBoard, @jenstden captures ongoing speakers:

Sherry Breshears, longtime volunteer at #Vancouver Hastings Sunrise Neighbourhood House...

"This motion hides the fact that the park board has been working to fund the renewal of community centres, but it's (this current) City Council that refuses to fund renewal."

@jenstden continues to report on #VancouverParkBoard take down at city hall tonight:

Sarah Blyth, former #Vancouver park board commissioner:

"Public spaces are public wealth. It's all we have and especially for poor people, all they have is our parks.

I was a youth at risk. I volunteered at a community centre, then I worked with Alan De Genova and we built 8 different skate parks.

I'm begging you to consult with the public first."

Tonight at #Vancouver city hall re Mayor Sim's #VancouverParkBoard motion. @jenstden covering:

Former MP Libby Davies is asking "what is the secret deal you have with powerful developers to sell public park land?" That gets her a point of order violation!

Tonight! @jenstden covering #Vancouver Mayor Sim's questionable power grab to abolish the #VancouverParkBoard. 160+ people have turned out at city hall w/ majority opposed.

Former MP Libby Davies says "you are abusing your power by trying eliminate an elected body of 130 years." She says this move is unprecedented in Vancouver history. "the critical question is why."
