  1. I was going to buy a #SteamMachine and #ValveIndex for my birthday. But stupid #AI isn't content with destroying the earth and stealing jobs from my kids, it also has to drive component prices up so far they aren't releasing by then anyway.

Is there any upside to the trillions we are spending on 70%-accurate auto-complete?

  3. The new release of Gaia Sky is almost ready. Today is testing day, so it's time to dust off the Valve Index and see how much VR on Linux has improved since the last time I tried (it was underwhelming). With the Steam Frame on the horizon, I'm kind of excited, ngl.

  5. I'm selling my Valve Index VR headset. It's complete (headset, controllers, lighthouses, power supplies), including two extra face masks. For €490 it's yours, but feel free to place a bid.

Located in Amsterdam, NL, but I can send it wherever.

  9. Would you say a lot of space games in VR resort to HOTAS or gamepads instead of the VR controllers? And is that fine? Would love suggestions from players and other gamedevs!

  11. Oh yeah, the Valve Index controllers are some of the few controllers that I own that have dual-stage triggers and I find it... nothing remarkable.

I don't really get the hype for it. It's definitely not a replacement for pure digital triggers like on the Switch Pro Controller.

  12. After my $100-used original Oculus #vr stopped working, I was bereft. Befert!

No more Beat Saber! (I believe other #games are also available)

    Welp, I finally rectified that.

Every 3 months I decided to buy (and then was confused and intimidated into undeciding) the #ValveIndex This time there are *rumors* of *maybe* an *announcement* of Index 2. OK, but I've been breeft for like 2y already.

I just dropped $250 on a Quest. (No hashtag bc I don't want to send business to MZ.)

I can beat sabers again. Probably 4-6h of saber-beating in the last 48.

This time I hooked my heart rate monitor to it. 134bpm high so far. I can already feel my cardios vasculating.

  14. I have to say, the hardware support of the Valve Index for Linux (and specifically Gnome Wayland) is really good. Setup was pretty much plug & play.

    SteamVR however, eeeeeeh...

Of course the bad state of SteamVR for Linux isn't anything new. It was just a surprise for me just how much worse it is compared to Steam or SteamOS which both aren't all that polished or bug free either.

  15. I love looking at other people's lighthouse setups and then comparing it to mine.

I have one of my lighthouses literally on my bedside table. Right next to my alarm clock.

  16. Kind of sad how #Valve's own #VR hardware, the #ValveIndex, still has rather terrible #Linux support: 5 years after release there is no support for the HMD's cameras, the base stations won't turn off automatically and it is not possible to update their firmware. At least audio is working without messing around. Had some fun playing #HalfLife2VR when #SteamVR did not crash. At least my experience was better than trying the #Quest2 on Linux a while ago...
Here are some nice resourced to get your VR experience on Linux going:
    vronlinux.org/
    lvra.gitlab.io/

Still, it looks like I gotta fix or reinstall my #Windows11 partition (which remained broken for around 1 1/2 years) to get a proper VR experience. 🥲

  18. Excuse me, but if you make a game and is not on Steam its pretty much dead.

Steam is not perfect, but it has transcended beyond a store, or platform. It's now an ecosystem.

What is the closest competitor? The Microsoft Store?

  22. Now that GNOME has DRM leasing support, I've been playing around with VR in Linux again, and, like, I gotta say... :otter_peek:

It's still a complete dumpster fire :neofox_what: It's been years and I can't believe it hasn't improved whatsoever. It's frustrating how much work Valve is putting into every other part of Linux for the Steam Deck, but SteamVR feels all but abandoned.

Honestly, it kind of feels like Valve dumped the Valve Index out then forgot about it. The most they've put into Steam VR in years was just taking the new Steam Deck big picture mode and plunking it into the VR menu. I think they deserve more criticism for letting Facebook basically take over the VR space, especially with how many games are Quest-exclusive nowadays.

I feel bad complaining because Valve has made gaming on Linux absolutely incredible. Honestly I wouldn't be able to run Linux if it weren't for them. But still. This is the last thing I boot into Windows for. :blobfoxmeltsob: I really want it to work.

  24. Wanna see a really well hidden headphone jack? Seriously, in all the years I've had the #valveindex I never found it?!
    Who would find it there?

  25. These fucken index clips are so fragile I now went through 4 of them in the past year...
Dms I'm now out of them so now I need to find a different solution to keep cable from being damaged

  26. Just played #BeatSaber via #opencomposite using a #monado + #libsurivive stack on my #ValveIndex.

Not only did it work but it worked extremely well after using `survive-cli --steamvr-calibration ~/.steam/steam/config/lighthouse/lighthousedb.json` to import the SteamVR calibration data.

Honestly, compositing was a lot smoother than #SteamVR on Linux even. Impressive.

All working beautifully on #NixOS thanks to @Scrumplex's work in PRs like github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/

  27. I had once again the opportunity to contribute the use of #NixOS #Linux to the #SteamHardwareSurvey. Also had a #ValveIndex connected, even tho i currently have some software issue with VR games.

This is a very small action to promote #LinuxGaming and #VRonLinux.

Also funny how the Linux version is 6.6.6.
