  1. …Ok, I know everyone has JavaScript (except when they don’t), but consider this:

    1. The web was engineered to be resilient in ways that @adactio brilliantly talked about in 2019: mastodon.social/@urlyman/11184

    2. Maybe notice that things that ‘just work’ are in the process of having more frequent and extended periods of *not working*, and that that process is only just getting started

  4. Well yes, it is an ambitious target, but not ambitious enough.

Even if we stick to it, and even if other countries do the same, it still means we'll continue to pump more CO2 into the atmosphere for at least another 11 years.

Look at what's happening with the climate this year, and just imagine what it will be like with another 11 years of warming.

    We need to act faster.

  7. I suspect the lack of authorities and emergency folks in some of the smaller towns and suburbs has been due to the sheer size of the catastrophe and the need to do things like… drain flooded parkades of a mall in the region where it is fear many were trapped and drowned.

    Horrible scale of devastation.

  11. "During the decades of ‘developmentalism’ and the housing bubble, meaning from at least the 1960s onwards, urban planning policies ignored the advice of ecologists, geographers, and other professionals who do understand natural cycles and their disturbances. When environmental reports advised against certain actions, political and business elites always managed to find a way to ignore those recommendations and, in some cases, obligations."
