Unfortunately, most modern USB floppy drives are unable to handle 720K DD disks anymore, because they're dirty and cheap. Today, I just picked up this classic SONY VAIO disk drive. It's really sleek and nice looking and can also read and write to 720K diskettes without any issues. I think this is awesome!

I've switched back to the #Vaio SVP13 ultrabook. The battery issues with the #ThinkPad T480 kept coming back and now the internal battery is refusing to charge.
To be honest, the T480 never felt "right" to me. I'd rather use my flimsy, significantly slower Vaio with less RAM, a dodgy battery, and a keyboard that's falling apart, but significantly better screen and speakers.
The T480 is still under warranty, so I'm going to contact the seller and take it from there.
Happily. the WiFi 6E card I bought for the T480 works in the Vaio, so at least I've got a bit of an upgrade.
Where I go next I don't know. For what I do, If I can't get a refund on the T480, I might consider spending a bit more and getting an X1 Carbon gen 9, or maybe even investing in a Framework 13.

So we have a nice #Sony #VAIO PCG-N505SN with a vinegar syndrome… I know it's curable but haven't tried yet.
Also, a part to glue back on the battery (which needs a rebuild anyway). Other than that, it should only need some cleanup.
Oh, and new rubber feet, but I'll take care of that soon. So I can send some to @thisdoesnotcomp 😉

I've been gifted a gorgeous #Sony #VAIO PCG N505X, introduced circa July 1999, which was originally bought for over €3,000. It still works beautifully!
The lid is very bashed around, though. Does anyone have any tips on how to clean that up? Is it even possible?
I plan to swap the hard drive for a #CompactFlash card, and I'll see if I can get a new battery for the machine. It comes complete with a dinky but sturdy carry case, a port replicator, charger, CDROM drive and a functioning 10/100 PCMCIA Ethernet card.

Since I was unable to find the restore media for this super cool little #Vaio, I thought I’d see if I could use some kind of solid state media to replace the HDD, but it uses this weird CF type ATA 100 interface. I couldn’t get it to play nice with any of the CF cards I have. The HDD seems to have some minor issues. I was able to backup the files to a USB drive, then CD boot Clonezilla and make a full backup of the HDD. I was able to find a new old stock of the same 40GB HDD for a good price on eBay but only make the purchase after Clonezilla was able to successfully make and verify the image. Now I sit and wait. Put the machine back together. Next time I take it apart I wanna lube the hinge, add some epoxy to some of the hinge plastics and repaste the CPU.

Thinking about selling my Sony Vaio laptop...
It was my first laptop, but it's grown really just out of use for me. It's quite heavy, it doesn't have much benefit in terms of ports or software, the hardware is really out of date for my uses ( The GPU was basically out of date when I bought it 💀 )It has a FireWire and Sony MagicGate port, but....
My x230 has an Expressport slot. I have a FireWire PCI-E addon card. And generally I only need firewire for DV tape capture (which is very rare for me to do anyway)
And the MagicGate port is only for Memory Stick and Duo cards, which I mean were really only used for older hardware too... but I have a really nice multi-port USB 3.0 device for reading MS/Duo cards...
Also the power port is LITERALLY the most frustrating I've used. I've replaced it three times now:
Wasn't holding the charger properly, so replaced
Got banana mushed into the port, impossible to determine if it was truly clean or not, replaced
goto 1.
I managed to find a replacement for the keyboard on Aliexpress as well (amazingly, last one, EN-US) as some of the keys stopped working following water spilling on the laptop + a year of storage making it work again somehow.
It's probably been close to a year ish of not having used this laptop... but... it feels almost wrong to sell it. it was my first laptop!
Actually honestly this was a mistake to spend as much as I did on this NEW when I bought it so many years ago. Sigh. I doubt anyone would want to buy it even! :(
There was a model variant with a blu-ray drive available, which I HAVE found listings on ebay for the bare drive, but it's close to $100 ish.

OFC they all are #downgrades in #performance to #WindowsXP but #WindowsVista is worse than #Windows8 & #Windows10 together!
