The Qinghai-Tibet Railway ran beside us past Tanggula, the world’s highest railway station.
Our “road” was permafrost, snowmelt, gravel, machinery, and 4-Low pretending this was all fine.

An old Silk Road gate whose name likely points to a takia — a Sufi lodge where dervishes, Muslim mystics on a path of devotion and remembrance, gathered.

We had Machu Picchu almost to ourselves. Not because we planned it—Peru was in the middle of a political meltdown. China Overland Part 5 is live: Saga to Zhangmu via G219, Lake Manasarovar, Rakshastal, Chiu Gompa, Mount Kailash, Darchen, Nyalam, G318, Zhangmu Port and the Sino-Nepal Friendship Bridge. Sacred lakes, yagna fire, kora town, yak-horn offerings, landslide news, macaques, and one steep gorge drop. High-altitude Tibet handed us to Nepal with paperwork, rain, cliffs, and opinions. Thin air, wet brakes too.

We drove Shehzadi across the Pamir Highway, Wakhan Corridor, Khargush Pass, Ak-Baital, Karakul, and Kyzyl-Art. One cliff-edge rescue, one shepherd-family shelter, and more altitude than common sense recommends.
We crossed into Kazakhstan at Kurmangazy–Kotyaevka, then stopped at the village gate: wait, why doesn’t it say Kotyaevka?
Because Kotyaevka became Bökeyhan in 2022. The road, maps, and truck talk still say Kotyaevka. Borders are stubborn.

Near Akespe, Kazakhstan, the ex-underwater geothermal spring now bubbles up where the sea once covered everything.
The Aral Sea vanished, but the spring kept going.
One of the weirdest stops on our Kazakhstan Silk Road route—and yes, locals in a Bukhanka van insisted on selfies 😄
If you stood here the day you were born, you’d be 12 meters underwater. Today, the Aral has left, leaving behind its sea bottom.
This is Butakov Bay - a brutal reminder of how fast human systems break. Rusted ships sit miles from moisture. Hot springs that once fed a cold sea now gush into desert air. It’s the second most surreal landscape we’ve crossed overlanding from Morocco to India.

We drove Uzbekistan’s Silk Road in Shehzadi the Toyota Tundra: Kazakhstan border to Jartepa, 4,500 km of Tashkent metro marble, Kamchik Pass, Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, Urgench, Kyzyl-Kala, Aydarkul, wrong turns, yurt-camp firelight, and FIRE freedom in motion.
E60/AH5 trans-Eurasia hwy: The E60 starts in Brest, France, and runs to the Chinese border. The AH5 connects China to Turkey. Here in Uzbekistan, they overlap as the M37—a single, absurdly massive ribbon of tarmac spanning continents with a straight face. It’s the ultimate global commute, mapping modern freight over the ancient logic of the Silk Road. Europe to Asia, served with a side of existential dust.

From Split 🇭🇷 to Vienna 🇦🇹, we found the perfect stopover: Maribor, Slovenia.
We visited "Old Vine" in Lent district—certified by Guinness as the oldest producing vine in the world (400+ years!). It survived Napoleon and WWII bombings to still produce wine today. 🍷
We also found incredible pleskavica at Gril Ranca right on the Drava River.
