  1. In 1999, we surfed the Web. Now we comb through it like a fantasy hero. Which posts are treasure, and which are deadly Mimics? What's real, and what's an impersonator trying to steal my attention?

Worse: reading all this bland AI monoculture text leads to us thinking bland AI monoculture thoughts.

  2. ICYMI: Explaining dark pattern: Dark pattern: interface design that steers people into choices they did not intend, now restricted by EU, Californian and Australian consumer and privacy law. ppc.land/dark-pattern/ #DarkPatterns #UserExperience #UXDesign #ConsumerRights #PrivacyLaw

  3. "What never came up in any review is that the friction we were removing has another name in my own field. Anna Cox and her colleagues call it a microboundary: a small obstacle placed before an interaction that keeps us from rushing from one context into the next. Their argument is that deliberately designed friction can interrupt automatic, mindless interaction and hand back a moment to think."

  4. Steam website bugs that annoy the shit out of me (non-exhaustive):
    - Sometimes when you click a developer or publisher’s name on a game’s store page, it takes you to the developer’s or publisher’s page. Other times it takes you to a search page filtered by that developer/publisher. There is no rhyme or reason to this.
    - But this doesn’t matter much anyway, because if you choose to ignore a developer/publisher, their shit will still turn up in your Discovery Queue anyway.

  7. Opting out of ad tracking : The least user friendly menu I've seen!

#Orange , the french #ISP offers you a free #TV box with your internet plan! The catch?

    Of course, it's filled with #ads .

I mean, it's free, you're the product etc, so I get it but I still go to the settings to disable targetted ads, which is on by default OF COURSE, but there's a nifty "Deny all" (Tout refuser) button!

But after clicking it, it does NOT disable everything, as most of their advertising partners are set to "Mixed consent" (where "Legitimate interest" data is still on!). That's not confusing at all!

So to disable them, you have to go one by one on each of their partners, scroll down, enable and disable the tracking checkbox to disable it. Peak example of unfriendly #uxdesign !

Multiply that with the ~100 partners they have, and I spent a solid 15 minutes just scrolling through menus to disable #tracking .

At least I guess you CAN do it if you're motivated enough?

  8. Open source tools are getting insanely good, but friction is still real.

Linux, self-hosting, and decentralized platforms are powerful, yet non-tech users struggle with onboarding.

If we want privacy-first software to go mainstream, user experience (UX) must take priority over sheer functionality.

Tech folks: What is ONE open-source app with a UX so smooth that anyone could use it today?

  9. [P] I have an idea for a story! It began with this video...

    youtu.be/vuXRXROIyKw

A question I want to get out ahead of is why this would be a story, rather than a conspiracy theory. The truth is the same one it's been for hundreds of years: hiverarchians just aren't that clever. Never attribute to [aught_var] what can be attributed to stolidity and greed! So, the Mr. Crabbs "Money!" clip is in play.

  10. Hey #UX designers. Please stop this nonsense to hide the date of a post behind gibberish such as "1 day old". This is no information at all. Trust people to be able to consult their calender and watches (if even necessary). Thank you.

Nan ? Pourtant y'a de quoi parfois...
