“How do changes to critical zone strength and structure change how hillslopes fail during extreme storms?
Hurricane Maria triggered over 70,000 landslides across Puerto Rico in 2017. Along the hardest-hit region, in the granitic watersheds in the Cordillera Central, [the authors] utilized a natural experiment where a sharp weathering gradient follows a knickzone migrating upstream into an ancient shoreline platform.
These changes in the local balance between erosion rates and weathering rates let us [all] ask how changes in the critical zone control landslide susceptibility, size, and failure style.
[They] used an array of methods:
• Landslide mapping (pre- and post- Hurricane Maria)
• Field geophysics (seismic/resistivity) and geotechnical (DCP) surveys
• Stream profile inversion calibrated with cosmogenic 10Be samples
• 3D back-analysis of hillslope strength
And found that:
• Less weathered hillslopes produced more landslides per slope despite being substantially stronger because they store more water in the shallow subsurface that makes them hydrologically responsive during storms
• Stronger hillslopes lead to steeper first- and second-order streams that enhance debris-flow growth and coalescence, which has significant downstream impacts on communities along the floodplains
