In 15 minutes I’m seeing the Utena movie for the first time in 25 years!!!!! SO PSYCHED!!!!
This movie blew my mind in my early 20s. I remember walking around outside my apartment at twilight, in a kind of mesmerized daze afterwards. I wonder how it’ll hit now?

Just saw Adolescence of Utena. Beautiful. Sapphic. Yearning. And I think I counted at least 5 boobs! I really enjoyed the dreamy, puzzling storytelling. This film is like what Fire Walk with Me is to Twin Peaks.
Worth seeing for the two days its in theaters. But if you've never seen the show, just give up on making it make sense. Just enjoy.

Ho finito il volume 1 e non è proprio BRUTTO... Ma ha quel feeling da fever dream nonsense dei manga anni 90. Un sailor moon che non ce l'ha fatta.
Bellissimi i disegni, ma che roba che è quell'anime rispetto al manga (e rispetto alla serie tv)

Can't usually bring myself to go to the movie theatre, but I think it's worth dragging myself out to see Ice Adolescence, because the pink car and the rolling magic castle will be epik on the big screen!

I'm always wary of anything that seems to be inspired by Revolutionary Girl Utena because this was a show that came to the ultimate conclusion that "All Princes are Bastards". The answer to "But was that really such a good idea?" is: No.
It talks about the use of systems created for power and domination being inherently harmful, "revolution" is a carousel, but a lot of people can't seem to accept that, they want Utena to become a Prince, why shouldn't she if she wants to?
Now, to be fair, the Manga, Series, and Movie are all completely different. In the Manga, this exactly happens, which plays it’s themes completely straight without expecting more from the audience. This might make the Manga useful in understanding the show, but it’s also not as interesting.

Well, I finished #Utena.
I can't believe episode 39 ended like that. Luckily, like Evangelion, the actual ending is the movie coming after that. And like Evangelion, everything is mindfucking.
Was anything of this real? Well, at first glance it seems like the whole world was actually a collective mind bubble, created to protect the main cast from the "external world" (their traumas): Akio sexually abusing Anthy, Utena losing her parents and also Touga, another molested child, when he tried to save Juri and drowned (the Touga we met in the series was Utena's idolized ghost of him all along). Juri, of course, still feeling guilty for that and also being manipulated by her unrequited love at the same time…
I like how, in the end, while Utena was always there to offer support, it was Anthy who needed to be strong and choose to heal. She wasn't alone anymore, she could move forwards despite the pain and the feelings of being an abhorrent person (another syntom of abuse).

Watched the Utena movie. It was fine. Actual yuri. I can see why people love Utena if they just watched this. Probably the best to just watch this too.
If you watch the anime first, the movie feels more like... Sorry! Nanami, the chairman, the black rose arc, the plot, trying to make Utena straight... Sorry! All mistakes! Deleted!
I approve of the sentiment. However, I still wish they could have somehow taken the good 🦒 stuff of the anime story and retold it in the movie.

Utena was, uhh, artistic and trippy but also very male fantasy and a bit of a stinker. I'd really like to file the stink under criticism of real life but it's a bit tough...
There was some yuri in the show, can't deny that. It just felt like a footnote compared to how much all the straight, uh, activities got screen time. But it was something, considering the times?
For an old show, it was kind of fun, I guess. Best enjoyed with a chunk of salt and no yuri goggles, though.
