  1. #TIL that #EdsgerDijkstra taught at #UTAustin for fifteen years. He was there while I was a student there, and I might have sat in the same building as his office on multiple occasions, although I have no idea where his office actually was back then. Also, I'm not sure I knew who he was back then. XD

    @dfloyd888, did you know this?

  2. I get constantly bugged by #TAMU and #Utexas #UTAustin about giving to them. First, I am not independently wealthy. Second, why should I give to them when they clearly have no interest in upholding academic standards that make my degrees mean anything at all?

  3. CW: USPol, Higher Ed, Free Speech

    #Trump administration asks 9 colleges and universities to agree to pledge in order to get favorable access to federal funding. Reportedly asks among other things to cap international students, freeze tuition, give favorable positions for conservative stances, and enforce a gender binary.

  4. My baby brother is graduating from #UTAustin today :D And tomorrow. But today is the Cockrell School of Engineering's ceremony. Between him (chemical engineering), my younger brother (mechanical and aerospace engineering), and myself (electrical engineering), we form one (1) rocketry team at this point.

  5. ‘We’re All Asgardians’ a talk on the origins of Eukaryotes (us) with implications for our present-day immune systems by Brett Baker, University of Texas, Austin. Dr. Baker inaugurated the EPS Wares Distinguished Public Lecture series.

    Eukaryotic cells are most closely related to the 'Hod' branch of the Asgard branch of the Archaea.

  11. As the Austin Chronicle article notes, there are grounds to believe the School of Civic will suck resources out of existing institutions for research and teaching in the liberal arts at UT.

    Don't be fooled by the pretense that this is merely about reviving study of "Great Books".

    UT already has a center where undergraduates can undertake the study of core texts and ideas of the western tradition under the direction of a leading Straussian scholar, Tom Pangle:

    I suspect that Rufo et al. are unhappy with this center because Pangle is an East Coast Straussian, not a West Coast Straussian; see this Jeet Heer article for the distinction between these two currents of Straussian thought:

    This cop taking a selfie right before the go and stage a cop riot tells you all you need to know about their intentions.

  19. Texas Tribune reporting 46 out of 57 arrested have been released and charges dropped!

    Also making a lot of catty remarks about "outside" influence but as we just saw from the official UT Austin press release -anyone- can host an event practicing any protected 1A speech on the campus.

    I wonder why there's so much scrutiny this time? 🤔

  20. Another angle of Carlos from FOX7 being arrested has emerged: partyon.xyz/@nullagent/1123286

    The OP has a bio that says "I religiously devote myself to Texas Football" and his caption for this clip was "Guy with camera gets rko’d by police".

    ... I'm not going to lie, I had to google RKO and I'll be damned if Chris from Austin who loves football isn't right about this cop abuse!

  23. On a hot, humid night with no moon, no competing outdoor lights, no wind, in a 600 acre nature reserve in mid-July, I should be seeing more insects at the blacklight than this. Disappointing.
