Wrote a quick and dirty
.objloader for the Utah teapot (1975 ed. - 216 faces). And away it goes. 🍵 I was really expecting a few more issue with my DIY terminal software raster. :blobhaj_witch:

All muddled up trying to make the M56 Smart Gun
Completely mis-read reference pics
Struggled to make topology work

A stray cosmic particle strikes a neuron and I get a stupid idea and have to see it through. :P

I fear this QR code may brand me as pretty old school. #computergraphics #utahteapot Generated the icon with a small raytracer I wrote a few years back. https://mvandewettering.com

I have learned that there was what appears to have been a major fire at the Friesland Porzallan factory in Varel in Germany in on 29th June 2023:

For fellow IT or computer graphics nerds if I mention the "Utah Teapot" then the connection will be apparent.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_teapot
This factory was the home of the original Melitta tea pot design and was still in production prior to the fire.
It's not clear to me at the moment if production on the Melitta design has restarted.
For reference it's item 12090340117 in the catalogue and listed as "Teapot 1.4l White Utah Teapot"
Yes I do have one, imported from the factory and it's an excellent tea pot for those looking for an iconic and historical and functional design 🙂
The computer models of the teapot are a lot shorter than the physical pot as can be seen.
Edit: There appears to be debate at what point the computer model was shrunk although the Wikipedia article seems to suggest this was a deliberate aesthetic choice 😟🤷♂️

I love it when tech culture gets recursively self-referential.

Look at what my wife gave me for my birthday. The good old #UtahTeapot. I use this when I teach #ComputerGraphics (of course), but did you know that is is still manufactured to this day by a German company that is just a couple of miles from my in-laws house in #Ostfriesland

@johnlogic Just a reminder that you can still buy the original #UtahTeapot from its original manufacturer in #Friesland:

The #Utah #Teapot #UtahTeapot was produced by #Friesland #Porzellan in North #Germany. They were part of the #Melitta group back in time and you can still buy it. I have two of them in my kitchen cabinet.
That teapot was used in so many 3D renderings!

Fun fact: The original #UtahTeapot, used in early #ComputerGraphics, is still being made in #Ostfriesland

https://frieslandversand.de/teekanne-0-35l-weiss-utah-teapotI've made a tutorial for my students on how to render it with the Lambertian lighting model in #OpenGL using #Qt

Need to update it to #Qt6, though.
