A split in the spectrum? The ongoing battle to define autism
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdew81wd2y8oI think this "continuing row" in the UK over the definition of Autism appears to be part of the continuing "Culture Wars", and the misunderstanding and hate directed at neurodivergent people.
Professor Dame Uta Frith is quoted in the article, and I found her opinions to be really quite extraordinary — practically everything she said is wrong. It's dangerous of her to spread misinformation by denying the prevalence of late-diagnosed Autism. Additionally, it's awfully sexist of her to spread doubt about the diagnosis of women with Autism. Her narrow definition of Autism is not at all backed by credible research. Autism is a spectrum: there's a range of symptoms, it has some overlaps with ADHD symptoms, and there's no simple "one size fits all" definition. Uta Frith can get in the bin.

For years, authorities and others in positions of power have made it very clear that autistic people’s experiences wouldn’t be taken seriously without a diagnosis.
And now, in some quarters at least, we're the ones being blamed for overloading the system 🤷♀️

Because a ‘world without autism’ isn't abstract.
It's a world without autistic people. 🙎🏽♀️🙎🏾🙎🏻♀️There’s also a deeper issue here.
Autistic people aren't believed about our own experiences. Or we don't get asked at all.
