One hot night in May, the Texas House of Representatives debated Bill 1106, which said denying a child's gender or sexual orientation is not abuse or neglect. Seven blocks away, Brigitte Bandit, a local activist and drag queen performed to a standing-room-only crowd at Oilcan Harry's, one of Austin's longtime gay bars. She was performing her weekly show, LegiSLAYtion and Liberation, where she broke down the LGBTQ+ news of the week. @Eater takes a look at gay bars throughout the U.S. South — in Birmingham, Alabama, Fort Worth, Texas, and Durham, North Carolina, about how they're resisting. At the end of that night Bill 1106 passed, but Bandit was not defeated. “We’re in this together,” she said. “There’s people who love and support you, despite the headlines, or who’s across the street.”

Basic US history reminder: Keep in mind that slavery in the US slave states was not something just on plantations. Human enslavement was central to the economic & political system.
Pretty much every structure in the US South from European Colonial times through the US Civil War was built with slave labor. -
This year, between injuries, flares and Hail of Unusual Size, I am way behind on gardening. And by way behind, I mean, I’ve watered and waved at the beds. And yet, they love me and have started blooming, and so instead of something cynical or political, I give you Bloomscrolling. Look at these wild beauties. 🥰

One characteristic that sums up people from New Orleans, according to its residents? Generosity. There's even a word for it: Lagniappe (pronounced "LAN-yap"), which is from Cajun-French and means "something extra." Here's a story from Southern Living that explains how lagniappe is fundamental to the city. "As new people are sewn into the quilt of New Orleans — like the immigrants from Latin America who have helped pull the city back together since 2006 — the most generous and hospitable traditions of New Orleans are passed on to a new generation," writes Joshua Carlucci. "And they stayed. And thank God they did. So the tapestry of Creole culture continues to evolve as well," restaurateur Frank Brigtsen told him. “I think there's a love that's inherent in Creole culture.”

A writer friend today talked about some cool names in her family tree, and some were very unexpected names! I have some interesting names in my southern family tree. A friend of mine grew up with a boy named Real Kill. Do any of your family or friends have unusual or unexpected names?
