  1. U.S. Postal Service reports $2.5 billion quarterly loss

US Postmaster Steiner said without action from Congress this year, “our plans would certainly have to entail changes that will impact service like taking a look at our service levels and closing thousands of unprofitable post offices, as well as raising prices.”

  2. Postmaster General tells Congress that Postal Service will not deliver ballots unless states comply with trump's demands to turn over voter rolls. Bastards.

  3. What this article doesn't say is that the US Postal Service was never meant to be a "business". It's a SERVICE. Republicans have been undermining that service since the Bush administration in 2006. They want desperately to privatize it. It's part of Project 2025.

  4. A *lot* of small businesses depend on smallish shipments from abroad, either to resell--wherein they don't have enough storage and funds to buy larger amounts--or because they need smallish amounts of essential components of the things they make.

Ending the de minimis exception is already fucking them over; this holiday season is going to bankrupt many of them.

  5. Trump ended the de minimis trade exception, which allowed international packages under US$800 of value to pay no tariffs, on August 29th.

As a result, the volume of mail to the U.S. has dropped by 80% by September 7th.

Droped. by. 80 FUCKING %. in two weeks.

I'm sure it all will be fine for small businesses in the U.S. come holiday season. Just dandy.

ETA: please disregard NPR ending with an asskissing to Trump (fentanyl my ass)

  6. Race

In my previous post I speculated on which of the two packages I have shipped over the last few days would arrive at its destination first, thus winning the race. Would it be the USPS package full of 35mm film that shipped out on Saturday or would it be the FedEx envelope with my passport renewal application that shipped out last night?

    I have the answer.

The film has arrived at The Darkroom. I can expect my scans to be uploaded to my account in 3-7 business days. In other words, an eternity. Disney and New York on film… coming soon.

  7. #PSA: Please be aware that the bullshit effort to "save" money will slow down post delivery in the U.S. starting today, with more changes coming in July. Give some grace to small businesses who are being screwed over on both side.

You may want to call your Congresscritters and demand they save the USPS from privatization.

  8. CW: U.S. Politics, U.S. Postal Service

Senator Patty Murray on Bluesky: "When your mail is delayed, your medications arrive late, or your packages get lost—remember it’s because two billionaires decided to fire thousands of mail carriers and cut billions in essential funding for USPS for NO reason except to break government & enrich themselves."

  9. Per WSJ:
#Trump plans to take over the US Postal Service (USPS) possibly this week. He plans to fire the governing board and place the USPS under the control of the Commerce Department (which, of course, resides in the Executive Branch of the government, so it would effectively be under his control).
