Fuckin #usdefaultism from Duolingo, as per.

US-Amerikaner so:
Der Bahnhof am One World Trade Center ist mit 4 Milliarden US Dollar der teuerste Bahnhof der Welt!

Habe gerade "The Life of the Stars" angesehen.
@poetaster Since when does America have a Prime Minister? 😄 (you know that I'm joking right?) #usdefaultism

I swear I'd pay money for a social media filters that blocks out all posts about the US.
Why is it that Americans are never fucking able to use proper hashtags or contextualize their posts (because of US-defaultism, I know)? I can create all the filters in the world, they won't work if people express themselves like we're all from the same neighborhood.

am assuming by 'Cleveland' you're referring to a place somewhere in the USA and not the original one in the North Riding of Yorkshire, UK, or any of the other places in the world with the same name
😭😭

Time to mute every post containing "this country."

I woke up to three US-defaultist posts, almost back to back, on my Mastodon account this morning, followed by an admonishment from a member of the Mastodon HOA on this account.
Is this going to be one of these days on the Fediverse?
Come on everyone, you can do better.

I really can't stand US-defaultism anymore. If I follow you and you're guilty of it, it may be goodbye, even if you're a great person otherwise. That is a sign of disrespect for your audience. It's time you realize it. #USDefaultism #UnitedStates #Americans #US #SocialMedia

Oh no, somebody made me tap the sign again.
Time to republish an oldie but a goodie from a previous instance :
Dear American people,
This is your semi-regular reminder that #Americans are not the only people using the internet and that the #UnitedStates - as lovely as it could be - is not the only country in the world or on the internet.
Actually, for the first time in the history of #socialmedia, you’re probably not even the majority here, on the #Fediverse. This is a great learning opportunity.
So, a few tips:
Beginner level: Normalize saying “Americans” instead of “we,” saying “the US” instead of “here” (it’s “there” for the rest of the world), mentioning the name of the place you’re talking about instead of “there” (it could be “here” for us), and the name of the people you’re talking about instead of “they” (which sometimes sounds a bit derogatory, as if you didn’t really care about other people… you care, right?) It does make a difference.
Intermediate level: When you talk about something happening in the #US, do not assume and express yourself as if the United States was the default country and as if everyone understands the context of what’s happening. Background information helps. Contextualization is gold. Once again, just adding “in the US” when you talk about something makes a world of a difference. Don’t fall into #USDefaultism
Advanced level: Try to talk about other things than just American things. Open yourself to the rest of the world, and learn about it. It’s an awesome place. And, in my opinion, the Fediverse is the perfect tool to interact with people from many other countries (you also could do that on your previous social media of choice, but I understand that it was easier to stay in your cultural bubble back then).
Expert level: Try to use the metric system… No, I’m joking here. I know you can’t. You get a free pass for this one. You can still keep on measuring in refrigerators and watermelons. Well, maybe, just maybe, when you talk about temperatures, adding an “°F” (or a “°C” if you can) would help a bit.
Thank you for your understanding and your efforts. If you have any questions, we’re here to help.
Love, The Fediverse and the World, and me, your friend, David B. Himself.
PS: Some people have commented in the past that “Americans” are not just people from the US. It’s true. However, it is also the official English name of the citizens of the United States, even if you don’t like it. Polysemy exists and is not a rare thing. It’s not an issue when there is context. I think there is plenty of context here. 🙂

It's going to be quite a week.
After a weekend full of "the world has lost TikTok" (Nope, just the US) it's gonna be a day full of "Black people" and "White people" (because of course, all Blacks and Whites are the same, in the same context, with the same history, and the same current relationship as Americans) and next I guess it's going to be "Trump president of the world."
I'm this close to unfollow every American who express themselves like this and everyone regardless of nationality and past relationship who boosts such posts.
#UnitedStates #Murica #Americans #USDefaultism -
I heard Tik Tok was banned. How come it's still available on the App Store?
Oh wait, it’s only banned in some faraway foreign country, not the whole world. Goddamn US Defaultism #tiktok #usdefaultism -
Another symptom of American-defaultism that is rarely mentioned is how quickly they resort to the term "human" to describe a behavior that's highly social and/or cultural.
#UnitedStates #US #Murica #AmericanDefaultism #USDefaultism -
You don’t live in the US? Got tired of seeing internals of #USPolitics? #USdefaultism getting at you?
Try Mastodon filters! Open some space to #music, #tech, #games, #woodworking or any other topic that would not fill your insides with intellectual tar!

#USDefaultism is especially annoying when it comes to #getFediHired. If you are searching for a job tell people "where". I swear there are also companies outside of your north american fever dream.
-
what I like with fedi is that #usdefaultism just doesnt exist here. at least it doesnt feel like it

#USDefaultism is especially annoying on the job market. And especially especially annoying among #getFediHired.

If you make a tool for #fediverse - please, stop with this insane #USdefaultism.
You can make it english-only, it's not much of an issue, but don't ignore everyone outside of the US. If you have multiple options related to individual US cities, but have none for #EU or countries like China, India, Egypt, Germany, etc... it comes off as extremely ignorant. And that's before we start talking about everything else than just geographic locations alone.
Looking at you #fedified.
