8/8 I don't know what happened to his team that fucking left him. I obviously have pretty strong feelings about how all that went down.
After a few days when things had calmed down, I asked an inmate why the riot.
His response: We wanted better conditions man.. Y'all are fucked up"
I couldn't disagree with him on that one.
So glad I left that place.

7/ From what I heard there was a lot of payback and broken batons and bones. After the riot was over, our company commander would pepper spray certain inmates who were locked in their cells after the water was turned off.
I'm guessing she kept track of who was saying nasty shit about her. 🤷🏾♂️
I only saw Enoch once after. We all paid him a visit. Never saw him again. I had heard that he had gotten a medical discharge soon after.

6/ I believe the man had skull fractures, because his head looked like a damn pumpkin it was so swollen.
Because the entire wing was locked down, our rapid response couldn't get in. It also wouldn't had made any sense because we had a handful and there was an entire wing.
I was out in the club (it was our 1 day off) with some friends when the MPs burst in and say there is a "riot at the prison, get your asses back to Post".

5/ and escaped with the other soldier leaving Enoch all by himself. Since the guard cage was open (procedure was to either stay in it yourself or lock it when you left), the inmates were able to release **ALL** of the locked cells and gates and that's when they took Enoch and damn near killed him.
We had just had riot training not even a week prior, so that was bad timing (I have a story about that too).
The CNN article says that he had minor injuries.

4/ He was approached and he ran to the back of the tiers and locked the gate. The front of the tiers had stairs where the inmates could walk up and down between levels. The stairs in the back were locked behind gates (also a place to do stuff where the cameras couldn't see).
Supposedly, everything should be "fine". Meaning Enoch was frightened by physically safe. Why he didn't hit his panic button, I don't know, but the supervisor left the cage and didn't lock it

3/ We could respond within 10 seconds to any alarm within the castle. That was practiced A LOT. Since most wings had a team of 3, one to work the cage, opening, closing cells and handing out medication, etc (usually the highest rank) and the others actually walked the upper and lower tiers to make sure everything was good.
From what I heard, Enoch did see an inmate with a shirt on his head. I forget what that meant, maybe a gang thing (its been almost 30 years now)
-
2/ If you pressed the button, the alarm triggers in lower control.
Control was a place where it was a small cylindrical structure in the middle of the rotunda. The rotunda would have all of the entrances of the wings which housed the different tiers.
Control had two levels, upper and lower control. The upper control controlled the gates. Only one gate to one wing could be open at a time, and lower control handled the alarms.

9/9 Turns out, the frontal cortex isn't fully developed until mid to late 20s so its no wonder why privates (I've heard stories about Airmen too) do the shit that they do.
-
8/ Now that I reflect on that incident and environment (21 days on, 1 day off) working 8-12 hour shifts in a maximum security prison, yeah we could be considered a bit psycho.
It is a crazy environment to be in at any age especially when you are 18 or 19 years of age.
There was a phrase I heard while I was there:
"The only difference between a prison guard and an inmate, is that the guard gets to go home after his shift"
I think that's largely true.
-
7/ "I CAN"T LEAVE YOU FUCKING PRIVATES ALONE FOR FIVE FUCKING MINUTES" he bellows.
All I remember after that, was turning my weapon into the armory after seeing the supervisor relieving Smitty of his weapon, and chewing ass like I hadn't seen since first days of basic training.
I do know after that though, Randy was a model citizen and we never had any problems going forward.
-
6/ Smitty isn't having any of it and is dishing it back to Randy. Randy gets upset and decides to *spit* on Smitty.
Without hesitation or saying a word, Smitty raises his shotgun and plants it dead in Randy's chest. That's when the "oohing" and "ahhing" stopped as everyone realized that Smitty *hadn't* cleared his weapon yet.
As we are trying to talk Smitty down, the supervisor comes back outside and sees what's going on and goes the fuck off
-
5/ As we get to red the clearing right outside of the entrance to the barracks, the shift supervisor had to go inside for some reason so we are a bunch of privates standing around the clearing barrel.
I had already cleared my weapon (you weren't supposed to load the shotguns unless you were going to use them but we loaded at least one round anyway).
Randy clears his shotgun and for whatever reason decides that this is the time to start insulting Smitty.
-
4/ We had tower guard duty that week so we would be issued shotguns and a 4 round pouch. The shift that day was uneventful. (I do have some stories about shit we've seen at night though. Let's just say I believe in ghosts).
The shift supervisor goes up to each tower to relieve us of our duty with our replacement. So we are in line walking back to the barracks that is literally right across the street to turn our weapons into the armory.
-
3/ Randy was also the type that took pleasure in drowning rats and killing small animals. Let's just say we all had one eye on Randy whenever he was around.
The next soldier whom I will call "Smitty", was a tall and lanky black dude that looked like he smoked more than Smokey did in Friday. He was usually calm and just would shrug off whatever shit Randy would usually say.
To set the scene, we were all stationed at the original USDB https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Disciplinary_Barracks
-
2/ This incident happened while we were stationed at Ft Leavenworth Kansas. This happened about 30 years ago so I'm fairly sure any statute of limitations expired by now, but in case they haven't I'm going to change the names of others that were there.
Meet "Redneck Randy" (I actually forgot his real name). Redneck Randy was the type of solider that liked to be "edgy" and say random racist shit to piss you off and then claim you couldn't take a joke.
-
1/ Reading @Jaden3 post about racist National Guardsmen harassing him and his cousins made me think about a racist member of my platoon that almost lost his life over some bullshit.
