Привет! Я Игорь Кечайкин, руководитель группы разработки во Frontend-команде Flocktory. Недавно, решая задачу, связанную с API WebUSB для Fingerprint-атрибуции пользователя, задался совершенно не связанным теоретическим вопросом: а как создать с этим API драйверы на JavaScript? Чтобы разобраться, изучил спецификацию API WebUSB, а теперь принёс на Хабр выжимку самых важных элементов. В статье я расскажу о принципах работы решения и том, что с ним делать веб-разработчику, который хочет напрямую реализовать на сайт функцию, например, 3D-принтинга с пользовательских девайсов. А также вы узнаете, насколько это безопасно — для сайта, внедряющего API, и для девайсов юзера. Unfortunately it's all the fault of the #usbif. USB C is great in theory and I love using one cable to charge everything from my headphones through my phone to the laptop, and a lot more. The problem is that a lot of features are just optional and there is no clear or required labeling for manufacturers, everything just looks the same: cheap cable that supports USB2 and 10W charging = USB4 50gbps cable that can handle 200W of power if you only look at the cable

There's a famous joke in computing that there are only 3 hard problems, and one of them is "naming things".

But the USB Implementers Forum has long shown it's up to the challenge of that description. "USB 3.2 Gen 2x2" to describe a USB port's speed/protocol version is perhaps the worst name I've seen in years.
