  1. Los Alamos nuclear secrets "leaked" in LGP-21 magnetic disk memory:

I guess securely wiping storage media wasn't a thing eh?

  7. Writing a custom music replay routine for #BendixG15 to play "At Doom's Gate": youtube.com/watch?v=no0CkQk7id0 (relevant bit starts around 6:40 or so)

This stuff immediately reminded me of The Story of Mel from The Jargon File: catb.org/jargon/html/story-of- (if you know this file you're officially an old fart)

People of the #Demoscene: You're always looking for challenging and interesting platforms. Here we have one... I'm expecting some "wild" wild compo entries. I think we have to resort to using the emulator here though.

  12. I have to laugh - late last night after watching #UsagiElectric's chat with Eric Schlaepfer, co-author of "Open Circuits: The Inner Beauty of Electronic Components", I popped the book in my shopping cart. Today, intending to buy it, it's a euro more expensive!

    #RetroComputing is affecting the economy!

(Yes, I bought the book anyway. It looks too good to miss.)

  13. Managed to watch the latest Usagi Electric video tonight. Just fantastic!

I have never seen a paper tape puncher in action before, and wow, just wow 😲 That thing was insane. Also, I had never really appreciated that there was 5 level and 8 level tapes. In hindsight it makes sense, I just never thought about it 🤔

    Well worth a watch!

  14. #usagielectric video Repairing a 1956 vacuum tube computer Bendix G15: youtube.com/watch?v=8P48899B1W

Learning the details of the Bendix G15 system architecture leads me to believe this system allowed creating some beautifully optimized code. Or rather the opposite: Naive code would lead to massive delays due to the cyclic nature of the memory. Having to wait for data would lead to massive slowdowns if code/data wasn't aligned properly. Fun stuff! I bet some nerds got the kicks from making their manager's code run in 1/3 time.

Random tidbit from the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bendix_G Wikipedia article:
Apparently Bendix G15 was the first computer Ken Thompson ever used.
