Ever guarded, George Washington was a difficult man to paint. He once complained about “the irksomeness of sitting and the time I lose by it.” But his most famous portraitist, Gilbert Stuart, worked tirelessly to put the general at ease. And while Washington only sat for him twice, Stuart created more than 100 paintings of the first US president.

Washington may not have liked sitting for portraits, but he understood their significance.
