Finally an #MMT economist responding to the hysteria about #USdebt (maybe I missed someone else?).

Oh no! 40 trillion! Do you know how much more that is than 39,999,999,999,999?

$1USD. (All milestones are arbitrary and ridiculous but make good clickbait.*)

And all debt hysteria is ridiculous as Bill Mitchell explains at length.

*Media and those who thrive by being its talking heads are competing for our 👁️ 👁️ … to make profit, not to educate or inform.

Sanity and decency rather than hysteria or complacency in this discussion of US debt.

It will be helpful viewing for Americans worrying about the size of the debt and salutary for Democrats and progressives when thinking about policy priorities for a post-Trump USA.

When discussing the current and projected level of US debt, always....

  5. 🎉 Oh joy, the U.S. debt is now 123% of #GDP, because who doesn't love living in a nation that has more debt than it can count? 🤡 While the St. Louis Fed dazzles us with tools and apps to track this economic magic trick, perhaps they could also release a tutorial on how to not freak out about the impending financial apocalypse. 📉

When something that was thought to be unsinkable starts to sink, there’s always some small band playing nearby.

  7. #NowPlaying just in time for our #USTreasuries being an #USDebt issue, on #HBO :
"Too Big To Fail" which is about the 2008 financial crisis involving investment banks & real estate derivatives.

Apply that to today's situation with U.S. Treasuries --when Russia & China did a massive holdings dump of Bear Stearns & Lehman Brothers could happen to their holdings of U.S. Treasuries, and there's no Fed to bail out the Fed like they did Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac et al in 2008.

  8. 'US 10-year treasury yield has surged nearly 0.5 percentage points since Washington launched its war...A rising yield indicates investors are offloading Treasuries and that the US will have to offer a higher coupon, or interest rate, on future issuance. That, in turn, will exacerbate growing worries over spiralling US public debt, which has increased by two-thirds this decade to a record $38.5 trillion'

  10. Day 23 of the Trump/Republican shutdown - and the Republican national debt.

    - GOP led House of Representatives remains in hiding
    - Trump is tearing down a significant portion of the White House after having trashed the Oval Office.
    - US Republican debt hits $38 trillion (that’s 38,000 billion dollars)

The US national debt in 1980 was $908 billion.

The $38 trillion debt is directly due to Republican fiscal policy since 1980, the year Ronal Regan (GOP) was elected.

45 years of Republican tax cuts for the rich and corporations is a primary reason for the US debt.

GOP economic policies have failed. They failed to achieve any stated goal they were enacted to address.
