  1. Hurrah.

  4. AUDITION wins the Ursula K Le Guin Prize for Fiction

Announcement banner for the recipient of the 2026 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction: Audition by Pip Adam

I’m delighted to report that Pip Adam has won the Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction for her novel, Audition. I was one of the five writers (the others were Mat Johnson, Fonda Lee, Darcie Little Badger, and Peter Rock) on the final selection panel presented with a 9-book shortlist—and I have to say, I don’t think the initial reading committee could have come up with a more diverse set of fiction if they’d tried: insanely different in tone, length, approach, style and thematic concern. But for me, Audition was one of the two books that right from the beginning spoke more clearly and more to my heart than the others—though in very different voices.

Judging a literary prize with fellow authors can be a bit like trying to reach consensus on Best Animal. How do you compare a jaguar to a pica, a cricket to a bear, a boa constrictor to a guppy? What I’m trying to say is that although only one book could be chosen for the award, it does not mean the other books are any less special, any less wonderful examples of their kind. In the end, though, there could be only one—only one recipient of the $25,000 cheque, that is. For you lucky readers there are eight *other* books to discover, and I encourage you to do so.

I’d like to say a lot more about these books, and with luck I’ll find the time to do that soon, but this post is late enough already, but for now, go read the panel’s thoughts on Audition, and watch Pip Adams’ acceptance speech.

  8. @DavidTanner

If you found the philosophy in Ursula Le Guin's later scifi works a bit heavy, she did write one book that explains a lot.

The catch is that this book is even heavier on the philosophy, so my guess is you'll give it a miss!

Will I ever learn? I'm thinking of choosing something by Ursula Le Guin for my book group choice next year— possibly The Lathe of Heaven. Yes probably divisive again. Definitely giving me plenty of scope to start things rolling with a really weird review... again!

  14. Libro «Ursula K.Le Guin- Un mago de Terramar»

    Título original:A Wizard of Earthsea

  15. In which I narrate Le Guin’s “Beige”

In Your Spare Time is a podcast from the blog of Ursula K. Le Guin. Each week, a different reader brings one of Ursula’s blog posts to life. This week it’s me, reading entry 21, Beige. “Beige is the only colour I can think of that is used as a fashion sneer,” begins Ursula’s April 2011 post about the colour, about fashion, about definitions, and about making statements.

I chose this one because it turns out we both loved and used the Oxford English Dictionary. A lot. I’ve always found its entries a great way to think my way into a subject. A long time ago, for my 40th birthday, I bought myself the full, 20-volume edition printed in 1989—the very last print edition, it turns out.

So, come the apocalypse, when you can no longer use your library card to access the OED, I WILL OWN ALL THE WORDS! I will, of course, share—with those who play nicely. So, y’know, be kind. Start today.

Meanwhile, you can listen to the episode here, or wherever you get your podcasts.

  16. I love this quote. It's so hopeful, in a patient (but slightly dark) way.

Pen: Pilot Metal Falcon SEF nib
Ink: Vinta Inks Sikatuna Sandugo 1565
Paper: JetPens View Corona (cream) 52gsm

I love this ink, but it gets pretty gunky as it dries up in a pen, and my summer travels meant I left this pen idle longer than I ought. You can see the effect on the edge of some of the lines. But such great sheen ☺️

  17. Hey, literary folk: I'm reading Ursula K. LeGuin's "Always Coming Home" via Libby, and it's amazingly good. (fn) I want to buy myself a copy, and must choose between a regular edition as published in 1985 and an expanded edition prepared with her collaboration shortly before her death. I've found that expanded/revised editions almost never are as good as the originals (eg Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia"), but it would be interesting to read the two additional chapters, her essays about it, etc. Is anyone here familiar with both versions so they can offer advice?

(fn) Mind-blowingly good. Like, "I haven't finished it yet but it could end up in my top 10 books of all time" good. Its blending of narrative and poetry and culture and myth remind me of Toomer's great and underremembered "Cane." Powerfully relevant to where we find ourselves today.
